Actor Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, better known as Blue Beetle, in writer/director James Gunn’s upcoming SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW.
“Xolo Maridueña will be suiting up as the Blue Beetle again as part of the cast of the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow,” Deadline reported, marking his first return to the character since the 2023 solo movie directed by Ángel Manuel Soto.
Gunn’s follow-up eyes a July 9, 2027 release and will feature David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Lars Eidinger joins as Brainiac, and Maridueña rounds out a cast that also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Adria Arjona as Maxima. Jaime Reyes is the first legacy character to officially carry over into Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe.
For Christian families weighing whether to line up, Maridueña’s two prior DC outings offer the clearest map of what to expect—and what to watch out for.
Movieguide®’s review of the 2025 SUPERMAN found “a strong moral pro-life worldview with a light redemptive tone” and praised the movie for morally uplifting and heartfelt content.

“[T]he movie changes Superman’s origin story in a significant way that destroys the original story’s biblical allusions to Moses and Jesus,” Movieguide® wrote, also citing a politically correct pro-immigration theme and two gratuitous strong profanities.
That’s no small edit. Superman’s story has always rhymed with Scripture—a father sending his only son from the heavens, an obscure boyhood in a small town, a savior who chooses restraint over vengeance. Strip those roots out, and you have a superhero who could be anyone.
The 2023 BLUE BEETLE, meanwhile, earned Movieguide®’s top four-star quality score, though a Family Content mark of -2 came with a call for extreme caution.
“BLUE BEETLE has a strong pro-family premise and message,” the Movieguide® review reads. “The female villain’s henchman tells Jaime that his love for his family is his weakness, but Jaime shows him that the love he has for his family is his strength.”
That’s a biblical idea in a DC suit. Scripture treats family not as a distraction from the mission but as its proving ground and its fuel.
The same review noted the pro-family premise is “marred by excessive foul language, brief false theology and some politically correct, Marxist content”—including more than 40 obscenities and dialogue that treats the universe as a living, conscious thing.
So the question hanging over SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW is really the same question hanging over most of Hollywood these days. Gunn has shown he can build a superhero movie with real grace and moral clarity. He has also shown he will dull those beats with profanity and ideological detours that shrink the audience he could otherwise be reaching.
Movieguide® founder Dr. Ted Baehr has spent four decades documenting a stubborn box office truth: movies driven by strong Christian and moral content routinely outperform those without. Audiences are hungry for heroes who reflect something true about sacrifice, family, and doing right when it costs you.
The clearest path forward for MAN OF TOMORROW is the one already laid out in these characters at their best. Restore Superman’s Christ-shaped roots. Keep Blue Beetle’s family-as-strength gospel. Let the heroes point somewhere higher than themselves.
Maridueña’s return is a promising start. Whether Gunn will let these heroes rise to the redemptive stories they were built to tell—that is the movie Christian audiences will actually be watching for.
