AMERICAN IDOL alum Danny Gokey’s new song, “Jesus Over Everything,” channels how God is bigger than all of our problems.
“Writing songs like this, it puts your life in perspective,” Gokey shared. “You can have the highs. But if you don’t have Jesus, it’s very fleeting.”
Those highs don’t stay high for long. And the lows feel all the lower.
“They can actually cut your life short, cut your hopes short and cut your future short,” Gokey explained. “And so bringing Jesus into the equation…Paul said this, ‘The things I thought were gain, I now count as loss compared to knowing Him.'”
Gokey hopes that listeners understand how God sees their lives through the lyrics he wrote. God can redeem the biggest mistakes and the most troubled pasts.
“And maybe the moments of the great high places — it was God who gave them the ability and the giftings to get there. Jesus is what brings significance to every moment,” he explained.

Some of the song’s lyrics are “I will trust in Your higher ways/ Over my future and my plans/ Over my need to understand/ Jesus over everything.”
Gokey lost his first wife shortly before he auditioned on AMERICAN IDOL. God brought him out of sorrow and suicidal thoughts to do what he was called to do, and this song certainly speaks to that.
“I’ve loved and I’ve lost. I’ve wrestled with my thoughts and trying to connect the dots. And none of it means anything without JESUS. He is over ALL and brings PURPOSE to each and every aspect of our lives! ✝️🥹” Gokey shared in another post about the song.
This song is the second single Gokey has released this year.
“I didn’t want to create music just for the church,” he previously told Billboard. “I wanted to encourage, motivate and entertain people who would never walk into a church because music is a gift that should be shared.”
His goal is to encourage and uplift his listeners and followers, not just through his music but through messages he puts on his social media.
He recently cautioned about the danger of being disillusioned with worldly things.
He said, “If we stay on fire and full for God, we’re gonna have to stay praising, stay thankful in all circumstances, guarding our hearts and our minds. This is how we stay full of God.”
Though Gokey recently signed with Red Street Records and produced a few singles, he hasn’t announced whether he will make another album soon.
