CBS gave fans their first real look this week at just how big Mark Harmon’s Season 3 return to NCIS: ORIGINS will be.

The networked released photos, first published by Deadline, that confirm present-day Gibbs is no longer just narrating the prequel series — he’s living inside its central mystery.

The season’s teaser sums up the stakes in a single line delivered by Harmon himself: “No matter how hard you try, or how far you go, you can’t ever leave it all behind.”

That’s the emotional engine behind Season 3, which ties a present-day investigation directly back to Gibbs’ 1990s posting at Camp Pendleton. One of the new photos shows Harmon hunched over a notebook, and eagle-eyed fans quickly clocked the detail: he’s wearing the same Titus Bait & Tackle cap Gibbs wore in his final appearance on the original NCIS back in Season 19.

Eric Christian Olsen, the NCIS: LOS ANGELES veteran who joined NCIS: ORIGINS as an executive producer this season, didn’t hide his excitement over the footage.

“Goosebumps,” Olsen wrote in response to the first-look reveal.

Harmon played Leroy Jethro Gibbs for 18 seasons on the original NCIS before stepping back from full-time acting in 2021, though he stayed on as executive producer and occasional narrator once the network built an entire prequel around his character’s early years. NCIS: ORIGINS premiered in October 2024, following a young Gibbs — played by Austin Stowell — through his rookie years at the Naval Investigative Service under mentor Mike Franks, with Harmon dropping in periodically as the older Gibbs “relays this story of his NIS beginnings,” as showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal put it when the series was first announced.

Season 3 changes that arrangement considerably and trims down to 10 episodes from the 18 that made up each of the first two seasons. TV Insider described the shift as a chance to finally see sides of Gibbs longtime viewers never got.

“Gibbs was a man of few words on the mothership for 19 seasons,” TV Insider wrote. “But with NCIS: ORIGINS, we’re getting to see parts of his life we either barely heard about or never knew existed.”

Movieguide® has followed Harmon’s slow-building comeback since the prequel’s earliest announcement and reported last month that his expanded role would coincide with a behind-the-scenes shakeup — co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal is departing after two seasons, with Olsen stepping into the executive producer chair alongside North.

NCIS: ORIGINS returns Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 10/9c on CBS, capping off a full night of NCIS programming that also includes the flagship series and NCIS: NEW YORK, with next-day streaming on Paramount+.

There’s something quietly true in the line CBS chose to headline this season. Gibbs has spent three decades of television running from a loss he never fully processed, and Season 3 finally makes him sit still long enough to face it. Christian viewers know that instinct well — the running, the burying, the conviction that the past can simply be outworked rather than surrendered. Scripture tells a different story than Gibbs’ teaser does: what we can’t leave behind on our own, grace was built to carry for us.
