SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY swung past TOY STORY 5 to become 2026’s highest-grossing movie, hitting $1.1 billion worldwide in just seven days, according to Variety.

“This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen,” said Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President, days after the movie’s launch. The debut, he added, reflects “the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world.”

Sony and Marvel Studios released the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie on July 31. Director Destin Daniel Cretton brought back Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, with producer Amy Pascal overseeing a Spider-Man partnership between the two studios now a decade old.

The plot finds Peter Parker squaring off with a shape-shifting new threat while wrestling with dangerous mutations of his own, all as he tries to win back MJ, who forgot him thanks to a spell cast in the previous movie. Critics and audiences have agreed on this one: BRAND NEW DAY holds a 90% critics score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, plus an “A” CinemaScore, the kind of across-the-board approval that tends to keep people talking about a movie long after opening weekend.

The numbers piled up fast. BRAND NEW DAY set the all-time domestic opening weekend record at $360 million, edging past AVENGERS: ENDGAME’s $357 million from 2019, and posted the second-biggest global opening ever at $932 million.

It didn’t let up from there. Thursday previews brought in $72 million, a record on their own, and the movie went on to break BLACK PANTHER’s mark for the best Monday in box office history.

Within six days, BRAND NEW DAY had crossed $1 billion worldwide, the second-fastest climb to that milestone ever, trailing only ENDGAME. Not long after, it passed TOY STORY 5’s $1.067 billion global haul to claim the top spot for the year, a title that had briefly belonged to Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY.

That’s no small feat in a summer packed with contenders. Holland and his co-star Zendaya also headline THE ODYSSEY, and between the two movies, the pair has been part of nearly $2 billion in worldwide box office in under three weeks — a reminder that 2026 has turned into an unusually strong year for movies willing to bet on scale and sincerity in equal measure.

Movieguide® has followed Spider-Man’s road to BRAND NEW DAY closely, from Holland’s costume reveal to the movie’s climb toward $1 billion. Our review found real substance beneath the spectacle: Peter Parker “risks his very life to save the life of another human being,” portraying a Christ-like figure in a story built around sacrifice and redemption.

That moral clarity is genuine, but so is the caution attached to it. Movieguide®’s reviewers counted roughly 40 instances of coarse language, including blasphemy, enough to earn BRAND NEW DAY an Extreme Caution rating for older teens and adults despite a full four-star entertainment score.

Hollywood spent much of the last few years fretting over superhero fatigue. BRAND NEW DAY’s box office run suggests audiences still show up when a story earns it — profanity aside, this is a Peter Parker willing to lay down his life for someone else, and moviegoers noticed.
