The Worldview

Worth reading — ages 8 and up. The story celebrates helping others, perseverance and choosing kindness.

Big Jim keeps looking for ways to help, even after painful experiences, and Grampa begins to move from selfishness toward serving others. Those are virtues a Christian family can welcome. The story includes an alien chosen-one prophecy and a destiny ring as part of its playful science-fiction setup. The main adventure emphasizes kindness and perseverance. Its talk of turning painful endings into new beginnings can invite a helpful conversation about grief: kindness matters, but sorrow is not something a child has to cheer away.

Big Jim’s helpfulness gives you a natural opening to talk about bearing one another’s burdens. Scripture says, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, ESV).

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Big Jim wakes each morning in Cat Jail singing, much to his grumpy cellmate Grampa’s dismay. When Big Jim tells the story of how he became a hero, the two set off together—and find themselves facing an invasion by adorable-looking aliens with a very unadorable plan.

Is the Writing Any Good?

Three stars: good, with real flaws. Dav Pilkey’s bold panels, visual jokes and energetic Flip-O-Ramas give this graphic novel the quick, silly momentum young readers expect. Big Jim’s sunny outlook makes an affecting contrast with Grampa’s grouching, and the backstory gives the comedy a tender center. The many jokes and sudden shifts can feel hectic, though, and this volume leaves its larger adventure unfinished for a sequel. It is a lively read, not a neatly resolved one.

The Final Word

DOG MAN: BIG JIM BEGINS has lively cartoon humor and a genuine heart for helping others. Its account of Little Jim losing his parents and its slapstick peril are worth discussing, and the story ends with the adventure still open. Worth reading — ages 8 and up.
