PIGLET’S BIG MOVIE
An adorable, deeply moral story about the quiet power of love.
Should You Watch It?
If animation has made you cynical, this is the cure. Piglet’s Big Movie is adorable, beautifully crafted, and deeply moral. Its gentle story honors self-sacrifice, humility, compassion, patience, and love without becoming demeaning or heavy-handed.
The film’s warmth is strengthened by Carly Simon’s songs, traditional animation, and voices full of personality. Children can enjoy the adventure, while parents can welcome a story about recognizing the unseen ways someone serves the people around him.
There are a few mild action moments, but nothing the source review found terribly frightening and nothing objectionable in the content guide. For a wholesome family outing, WORTH THE TRIP.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESPooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Rabbit set out to get Pooh’s favorite food from a hive of bees. When they tell Piglet he is too small to help, he feels rejected and wanders into the 100-acre wood.
Meanwhile, Piglet quietly helps other animals. When his friends realize he is missing, they find his “Book of Remembrances” and follow its drawings through memories of their shared adventures.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a thoroughly successful family film. The animation is traditional and winsome, Carly Simon’s songs enhance the movie, and the voices are well conceived.
Each character has a distinct personality. Owl pontificates, Rabbit begins negatively but comes around, and Pooh is pure love with a hungry stomach. John Fiedler makes a fantastic Piglet, while the characters’ foibles reflect real human beings without becoming demeaning. The source review also notes that the film was tested with a first-grade class and refined for that audience.
The Worldview
The film exalts self-sacrifice, love, compassion, humility, patience, and the cardinal virtues. Piglet consistently cares for others without thinking of himself, even though he fails to recognize how much help he gives. His friends eventually learn to value and appreciate him.
The source review describes the story as highly moral and redemptive. It identifies no distortion or objectionable worldview element. The image of Piglet in full armor suggests the armor of God, while his character reflects the biblical definition of love: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant” (1 Corinthians 13:4).
