PUSS IN BOOTS
Do the right thing in this funny, beautifully animated adventure.
Should You Watch It?
PUSS IN BOOTS is a very well-made animated comedy with beautiful 3D effects, plenty of humor, and a strong moral center. It condemns revenge, shows the importance of family, and gives its hero a redemptive path toward doing the right thing.
The film is not entirely free of concerns. Its sexual undertones—including Puss waking up beside a female cat without knowing her name—are unusual for a family movie. The plot can also become slightly convoluted, with some long, ride-like scenes.
If your family includes older children, this is a fun and entertaining choice with meaningful moral themes. For young children, parents should use discernment. WORTH THE TRIP for families ready to discuss its content.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESPuss in Boots, once an orphan and now an infamous outlaw, wants to help his hometown. His old friend Humpty Dumpty dreams of magic beans that can lead to a golden goose and its rare golden eggs.
When Humpty asks Puss to help steal the beans from Jack and Jill, Puss reluctantly agrees, hoping the treasure can help repay the town. Their adventure tests friendship, family, and Puss’s desire to become a hero.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a highly entertaining, polished animated film. PUSS IN BOOTS is very well made, with beautiful 3D animation, strong humor, and an enjoyable adventure.
The plotline is sometimes complex and slightly convoluted. Some long, ride-like scenes affect the momentum. Still, the overall result is funny, entertaining, and visually impressive.
The Worldview
PUSS IN BOOTS presents a strong moral worldview with redemptive elements. It condemns revenge, promotes doing the right thing, and shows the importance of family. The story also values sacrifice for others, references church, and portrays positive moral transformation.
The film’s moral emphasis aligns with a biblical view in important ways. Puss recognizes that stealing and revenge are wrong, and he learns that becoming a hero means choosing what is right rather than pursuing selfish desires. The sexual undertones complicate an otherwise mostly family-oriented presentation, especially for younger children.
At its heart, the film asks whether someone with a troubled past can change and do what is right. Scripture gives that hope a deeper foundation: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
