Should You Watch It?

The Tiger Rising gives families a story about grief that does not stay trapped in grief. Rob Horton and his father are trying to rebuild their lives after Rob’s mother dies, while Rob’s imagination and new friendships help him face a difficult moral choice.

The movie’s strongest qualities are its moral heart and its emphasis on friendship, perseverance, compassion, and doing what is right no matter the cost. The heavier themes of loss may affect sensitive viewers, and brief foul language and violence may be upsetting for younger children.

If your family is looking for a thoughtful adventure for older children, The Tiger Rising is worth the trip.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Twelve-year-old Rob Horton moves to Florida with his father after the unexpected death of his mother. At a motel near his new school, Rob struggles with grief, bullying, and an active imagination.

Then he discovers a Bengal tiger locked in a cage in the woods behind the motel. When Rob’s new classmate Sistine learns about the animal, the two friends must wrestle with what should happen next—and what doing the right thing may cost.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a good, worthwhile family adventure, though the source review offers few specific craft judgments. The movie centers Rob’s imagination, his budding friendships, and a meaningful moral dilemma.

Its emotional weight comes from the story’s treatment of grief and loss, while its adventure elements keep the focus on Rob’s choices and relationships.

The Worldview

The Tiger Rising presents a strong moral worldview. It teaches that grief is not overcome through anger, but through love, kindness, and friendship. It also emphasizes perseverance, compassion, strong parental figures, and doing what is right no matter the cost.

The film treats friendship as a source of healing. Rob’s imagination helps him hold on to what his mother gave him, while his developing friendship with Sistine brings him out of isolation. The story also makes room for compassion toward people who behave wrongly, rather than suggesting that anger can solve pain.

This is broadly aligned with a biblical view of love, kindness, moral courage, and compassion. The film’s account of healing remains centered on human relationships rather than explicitly on God, but its central longing—to move through grief without being ruled by anger—fits the biblical promise that “the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
