The war is over in Darrowby, but ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL is not settling quietly into the old routine.
“I won’t say it’s not sad when things change, because it is sometimes,” Helen Herriot says in PBS’s new Season 7 trailer. “But they change so we can have new, better things.”
That tender philosophy drives the one-minute preview, which mixes lambs, romance and a little professional rivalry into one very cozy package. After giving viewers their first full look at the new chapter, PBS will bring the series back to American television on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2027, at 9/8c.
Season 7 returns to the Yorkshire Dales in 1946, with World War II finally behind the residents of Skeldale House. According to PBS’s official season announcement, viewers can watch the broadcast on PBS or stream episodes through the PBS app and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video.
“Skeldale House is full once again and livelier than ever as our beloved characters reunite under one roof and look ahead to a hopeful new chapter,” the network said.

Peace does not mean a lack of problems. Actor Caolan McCarthy joins the cast as rival veterinarian Granville Bennett, whose offer of free consultations catches attention around town and threatens the status quo at Skeldale.
The trailer plays his introduction for laughs as Bennett mistakes Siegfried Farnon for James Herriot’s father, but the competition appears to run deeper than a bruised ego. James welcomes advances in veterinary medicine, while a changing agricultural world pushes local families to decide what traditions to keep and what practices must grow.
Returning actors include Nicholas Ralph as James, Rachel Shenton as Helen, Samuel West as Siegfried, Anna Madeley as Mrs. Hall and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan. Patricia Hodge also returns as Mrs. Pumphrey, with Maimie McCoy back as Dorothy, Gaia Wise as Charlotte and, of course, a Pekingese named Tricki still expecting first-class treatment.
Personal changes may prove every bit as complicated as professional ones. The preview hints at possible departures, new risks and romantic movement, but it keeps the details tucked away—just enough to let fans wonder who feels out of place and who may finally say what has been sitting in plain sight.
The new season will not be the last trip to Darrowby. PBS renewed ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL for Seasons 7 and 8 in November 2025, giving its gentle, character-driven storytelling room to continue beyond this postwar chapter.
Movieguide® praised the Season 6 premiere for its strong performances, care for people and animals, and reconciliation-centered moral worldview. That episode also required caution for profanity, alcohol use, kissing and an injured animal, a useful reminder that the show’s warm tone does not make every installment equally suited to every child.
Still, the first preview points toward the qualities that have made the series a comforting favorite: compassion, service, family and neighbors who keep showing up for one another. ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL looks ready to explore how a household can step into something new without losing the habits of care that made it a family in the first place.
