Amazon MGM Studios is set to release a new movie all about the legendary NFL coach John Madden this fall.
MADDEN, directed and co-written by David O. Russell, stars Nicholas Cage as the legendary American football coach and broadcaster, “alongside best friend and true original Al Davis (Oscar winner [Christian] Bale) – from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders, to becoming football’s most recognizable voice, to building the worldwide Madden NFL video game. Kathryn Hahn plays Madden’s wife, Virginia,” Deadline reported.
Alongside Cage and Bale stars Sienna Miller and John Mulaney, with Shane Gillis. The movie will be produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, Russell, Matthew Budman and Colin Wilson. The executive producers include David Bloomfield, Constance Schwartz-Morini and Michael Strahan.
“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden,” Russell said upon Cage’s casting as Madden.
“Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s,” the director continued.

As a coach, Madden led the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, becoming one of the youngest head coaches in NFL history when he took the job at 32. He won Super Bowl XI with the Raiders in 1977 and retired with a remarkably high winning percentage — one of the best in NFL history for a head coach.
Then, as a broadcaster, Madden was known for his enthusiastic, folksy commentary style, catchphrases like “Boom!” and his use of the telestrator to break down plays on screen. He won numerous Emmy Awards for his broadcasting work and called games for CBS, Fox, ABC and NBC over several decades.
He is also the namesake of the wildly popular Madden NFL video game series, which EA Sports has published annually since 1988.
Madden died in Dec. 2021 at age 85. He’s remembered as one of the most influential figures in football history, both for his coaching success and for making the game more accessible and entertaining to everyday fans through his broadcasting.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, MADDEN is “the celebration of a brilliant mind whose once in a century spirit and personality, partnership with his daring wife Virginia, lifelong friendships and infectious love of people and football transcended the world of sports.”
MADDEN will be available to stream on Prime Video beginning Nov. 18.
