THE ROOKIE Cast Teases What’s Ahead for Nolan and Bailey in Season 9

John Nolan and Bailey Nune have survived a hitman, an international crime boss and more life-threatening cases than most TV couples see in a decade. Season 9 of THE ROOKIE might ask something harder of them: sitting still.

“How do you slow down when you’re an overachiever?” showrunner Alexi Hawley posed to TV Insider, teasing the very human problem waiting for Bailey (Jenna Dewan) in the show’s ninth season.

Hawley and the cast previewed what’s next for THE ROOKIE during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25. Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Richard T. Jones, Alyssa Diaz, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Dewan, Lisseth Chavez and Deric Augustine all joined Hawley on stage, just days after Season 9 production began.

For Bailey, that overachiever question isn’t coming out of nowhere. Nolan himself is the one who put words to it, telling his wife back in Season 8 that she’s “pathologically” incapable of standing still — a diagnosis Hawley said will keep echoing through her arc this season, according to TV Insider.

Nolan (Fillion) has his own adjustment ahead. He’ll spend Season 9 training a brand-new rookie, a role reversal for a character who spent his own first season as the LAPD’s oldest trainee, now old enough to be handing out the advice instead of receiving it.

Dewan, for her part, sounds ready for the challenge. She’s said she appreciates the outside pressure Season 9 puts on Nolan and Bailey’s marriage, and she’s hoping it pushes the couple toward more teamwork and higher stakes rather than pulling them apart.

The panel wasn’t only about the Nolan-Bailey household, of course. Fans are still recovering from May’s Season 8 finale, in which Tim Bradford proposed to Lucy Chen on the beach only for the pair to be drugged and kidnapped by operatives working for a crime boss seconds later.

“We will send you some magnesium to calm you down, have a nice little bit of tea. We are so sorry for that,” O’Neil joked from the stage, according to PEOPLE, after Fillion asked the crowd how many viewers had “a conniption in their living room” over the twist.

Hawley confirmed Season 9 will pick up the Chenford cliffhanger immediately in a supersized two-episode premiere. “I think it’s the best of what we do, it’s incredibly high stakes, dramatic,” he told Deadline. “It’s a love story, it’s funny and unexpected.”

THE ROOKIE returns to ABC in January 2027. Movieguide® previously reported on the scheduling uncertainty surrounding the season, as ABC’s crowded drama slate has left the planned spinoff THE ROOKIE: NORTH in limbo even as the flagship series keeps setting ratings records.

There’s something worth sitting with in Bailey’s storyline beyond the plot mechanics. A marriage built on constant motion isn’t unique to a fictional firefighter and cop — plenty of real families run on the same fumes, mistaking busyness for purpose. Movieguide®’s review of THE ROOKIE once praised the series for its steady respect toward law enforcement and the people who protect their communities at real personal cost. If Season 9 spends real time asking an overachiever how to rest, that’s a question worth more than a procedural’s usual runtime.
