GOOD NIGHT OPPY
A stirring, family-friendly journey of teamwork, truth, and love.
Should You Watch It?
Yes. GOOD NIGHT OPPY turns a NASA mission into a moving story about truth, teamwork, cooperation, camaraderie, parenthood, and love. Its real-life interviews and newsreel footage bring the people of mission control into focus, while remarkably lifelike animation makes Mars feel tangible.
The film is especially strong because it treats scientific work as a human story. The rovers become deeply loved members of the team, and their long journeys create genuine emotional weight. There is no violence, sex, nudity, or substance abuse, though one “d” obscenity and a brief champagne toast keep the content rating from being higher.
Take the trip with your family. GOOD NIGHT OPPY is worth watching for viewers of all ages.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESIn 2003, NASA launches two computerized rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, toward Mars. Their mission is to collect data from the Red Planet for 90 days.
At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the human team waits, watches, solves problems, and guides the rovers across a dusty alien landscape. What begins as a limited scientific mission becomes an extraordinary story of exploration, perseverance, and the bonds formed between people and the machines they created.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this documentary succeeds brilliantly as both storytelling and filmmaking. GOOD NIGHT OPPY combines newsreel footage, engaging interviews with mission-control personnel, and life-like animation of the rovers moving across Mars.
The animation uses real photographs and satellite images to recreate the terrain, including dust, rocks, crater rims, and sunrises. The editing shapes nearly a quarter century of memories and mission highlights into an insightful, inspiring film that leaves viewers wanting to learn more.
The Worldview
GOOD NIGHT OPPY presents a strong moral worldview centered on the search for truth through science, logic, and reason. It also celebrates teamwork, cooperation, camaraderie, and transparency. The film treats exploration as a shared human effort rather than a solitary achievement.
The documentary’s most distinctive emotional idea is the relationship between the mission team and the rovers. Although the machines are mechanical and inanimate, they were made by human beings and reflect humanity. The team expresses love, care, and nurturing toward them, using family language to describe their creation, struggles, aging, and legacy.
The film aligns with a biblical appreciation for truth, diligence, cooperation, and love. It does not present a specifically Christian understanding of humanity or creation, but it recognizes that love and purpose can shape work profoundly. Its central longing is to seek what is true and worth knowing. Scripture says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
