I REMEMBER MAMA
A beautifully crafted salute to motherhood and family faithfulness.
Should You Watch It?
Yes. George Stevens’ classic family drama offers humor, tenderness, and many poignant moments as it follows a hardworking Norwegian family in 1910 San Francisco. Irene Dunne gives perhaps her best performance as Mama, the mother who holds her family together.
The film honors motherhood, faithfulness, commitment to principle, self-sacrifice, love, tenacity, forgiveness, education, and everyday parental involvement. Its family members do not have much materially, but they share responsibility, make sacrifices for one another, and recognize that love is shown in practical ways.
If you want a beautifully crafted movie that celebrates family as the bedrock of civilization, watch it with your family.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESKatrin, the family’s oldest daughter, is finishing an autobiographical story about growing up in an immigrant family. As she remembers the past, the film takes us to 1910 San Francisco, where Mama prepares the weekly budget with Papa and the children.
The family faces the ordinary pressures of limited means, education, illness, marriage, work, and creative disappointment. Through it all, Mama’s wisdom, courage, and love help hold the family together.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is an outstanding film, and the source review calls I REMEMBER MAMA a classic for good reason. It is beautifully crafted, with much humor and many poignant moments.
Irene Dunne gives perhaps her best performance in the title role. Barbara Bel Geddes excels as Katrin, the narrator and storyteller. Both received Oscar nominations, as did Ellen Corby, who plays Aunt Trina. The film’s memorable family scenes and warm dramatic storytelling make its tribute to motherhood especially effective.
The Worldview
I REMEMBER MAMA presents a very strong moral, pro-family worldview. It exalts motherhood, faithfulness, commitment to principle, self-sacrifice, love, tenacity, forgiveness, education, and everyday parental involvement with children. The family’s limited material resources do not prevent it from being rich in loyalty, responsibility, and affection.
The film’s picture of family stands against the dysfunctional family models often presented as normal in contemporary entertainment. Its central conviction is that good families can be built through high standards, faithfulness, commitment, sacrifice, love, forgiveness, and perseverance.
The movie also recognizes that generosity may be hidden, that people deserve forgiveness, and that education and storytelling can enlarge a family’s life. Its celebration of family responsibility aligns closely with Scripture’s call to love and serve one another: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
