MIDNIGHT RECKONING
A compelling Christian thriller about facing darkness before dawn.
Should You Watch It?
MIDNIGHT RECKONING is a surprisingly entertaining thriller made on a small budget. Its cinematography is superb, its jeopardy captures attention quickly, and its Christian message is direct without losing the shape of a suspense story.
The film looks at the seamy side of life, but it does not celebrate Joe’s choices. Instead, it presses him to confront his failures, seek forgiveness, and consider the salvation of Jesus Christ. The supernatural elements and “Twilight Zone” twist may not satisfy every viewer, but the movie uses them to open a closed worldview to the reality of good, evil, and Christ.
Older teens and adults who can handle the listed content should take the trip; families with younger children should choose another film.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESJoe, a Hollywood wannabe musician who sells drugs on the side, steals a bag of drugs from a deadly motorcycle gang and escapes into the desert. When his car breaks down, he cries out to God.
A large RV stops, and its taciturn driver, Atlas, seems to know more about Joe than he should. Joe wants to reach Las Vegas and sell the drugs, but Atlas takes him somewhere else—into an encounter with his own life and the demons he has been running from.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means MIDNIGHT RECKONING is a strong, worthwhile effort with some limitations. The movie is compelling from its opening jeopardy, and the superb cinematography helps make this small-budget production surprisingly well produced and entertaining.
Its faith-filled story is also skillfully orchestrated. The film raises serious issues about Joe’s life and gives them a supernatural resolution. Still, the “Twilight Zone” twist resolves some of those issues in a way that may feel less satisfying. Overall, it is an outstanding effort to tell a redemptive story.
The Worldview
MIDNIGHT RECKONING takes supernatural reality seriously. It presents both good and evil in the supernatural realm and challenges the closed worldview of self-satisfied modern humanism. The story does not treat Joe’s failures as harmless. He must confront what he has done, recognize his need for forgiveness, and consider the claims of Jesus Christ.
The film’s strongest conviction is that human beings cannot save themselves through their own abilities. Joe reaches the end of what he can do and must face judgment, divine intervention, and the possibility of salvation. The supernatural thriller framework and its “Twilight Zone” twist may make some answers less straightforward, but the movie’s redemptive direction is clear.
At the center is the Christian truth that freedom comes through facing sin and receiving salvation rather than continuing to run from one’s failures. As Jesus says, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
