MY MOTHER’S FUTURE HUSBAND
A heartwarming mother-daughter romance best saved for home.
Should You Watch It?
This is a gentle, heartwarming story about a mother and daughter learning to move forward after loss. Its positive Christian and moral elements include forgiveness, friendship, kindness, selflessness, love, and the value of family. The mother-daughter relationship is the film’s strongest feature.
The tradeoff is a sappy, predictable plot. The acting is generally good, though it falters in one emotional scene. Romance, relationships, and grief may also be heavier for younger children.
If this sounds right for your family, wait for a home viewing where you can guide the conversation.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESFifteen-year-old Headly and her mother, Rene, have become best friends in the five years since a tragic bus accident killed Headly’s father. After Headly experiences her first crush, she decides her mother needs romance in her life again.
Headly creates a plan to introduce Rene to potential suitors. Along the way, mother and daughter begin learning about love, relationships, and healing from past loss.
Is It Any Good?
Two stars means this movie has a good heart but limited freshness. The mother-daughter relationship is heartwarming, and the acting is generally good. The film also offers valuable lessons about looking beyond the surface of relationships to find the depth and beauty already present.
Still, the plot is quite sappy and predictable. The acting falters in one emotional scene. This is a pleasant, morally positive romantic comedy, but its familiar storytelling makes it better suited to a home viewing than a special outing.
The Worldview
The film presents a strong Christian worldview and redemptive elements, including prayer, references to God, angels, and Heaven. It depicts biblical moral values such as forgiveness, friendship, kindness, selflessness, love, and the value of family, especially the mother-daughter relationship.
Its central lesson is that people should look beyond the surface of relationships to find the depth and beauty hidden there. The story also treats healing from past loss as possible through love, relationships, and new beginnings. The film includes some moral complications, including an affair, deceit, and God’s name taken in vain once.
The longing for healing and renewed family life connects with Scripture’s call to forgive and show kindness: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
