Tim Allen spent more than 60 years carrying the weight of his father’s death. Then, moved by Erika Kirk — the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk — publicly forgiving the man who killed her husband, Allen finally let it go. “I forgive the man who killed my father,” he wrote, ending a grudge that outlasted most of his career.
That single sentence tells you most of what you need to know about the man behind Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, Buzz Lightyear and Santa Claus himself. Allen’s life has run through prison, sobriety, sitcom stardom, and a late-in-life reckoning with faith — and he has talked about nearly all of it, on the record, in his own words. Here are 17 facts about Tim Allen, each one straight from the source.
1. His father’s death, at age 11, sent him looking for God. Allen’s dad, real estate agent Gerald M. Dick, died in a 1964 car crash caused by a drunk driver. Decades later, Allen said the loss reshaped him entirely: “Trauma has that effect. I turned into my spiritual or metaphysical or religious self.”
2. His love of cars comes straight from his dad. Long before he played a tool-obsessed sitcom dad, Allen was a kid learning from his father’s garage. “My blood father was really involved in pruning the car [and] all the stuff I really like now,” he said, per Deseret News. “My dad got me into that. I really missed that connection.”
3. He was arrested in 1978 with more than a pound of cocaine in his luggage. Caught at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek airport in Michigan, a 20-something Allen pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. Looking back, he didn’t mince words with Yahoo Entertainment: “I was an eff up.”
4. He took the fall so roughly 20 others wouldn’t have to. Allen has said the bust swept up a wider circle of college-age friends. “We were a bunch of college kids — a bunch of the kids who overdid it,” he explained. “Two of us took [the punishment] for about 20 guys.”
5. Prison taught him to keep his mouth shut — and mean it. Allen served over two years in federal custody, and he says the experience rewired him. “I just shut up and did what I was told,” he told Yahoo Entertainment. “I learned literally how to live day by day. And I learned how to shut up.”
6. He walked out determined not to waste the lesson. Coming out of prison, Allen said he spent his sentence studying successful people and mapping out a different future. “I did not want to do that ever again,” he told Us Weekly. “I humiliated my family, friends and myself.”

7. He’s nearing three decades of sobriety. Allen doesn’t dress up his recovery with false modesty. “Grateful is the word,” he said. “I love my life.”
8. His faith is more wrestling match than settled doctrine. Allen doesn’t present himself as a man with tidy answers. “I’ve been a questioner most of my life,” he said, adding, “It’s been a long path to learn [how to] accept things as they are.”
9. Sobriety made him a different father the second time around. Allen has two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth, born on opposite sides of his recovery. “I was not sober for some of [Katherine’s] formative years. I made amends to her,” he said. “With the younger one…she never knew any of that guy.”
10. Even Allen was stunned TOY STORY became a phenomenon. Nobody on set thought Buzz Lightyear’s debut would become a cultural touchstone. “When we first saw TOY STORY, everybody was in the room going, ‘I don’t know what to make of this,’” Allen told Us Weekly. “[They] thought, ‘Maybe we just go right to DVDs.’”
11. TOY STORY 5 made him think about kids and screens. Thirty years into the franchise, Allen says the new movie takes direct aim at kids’ phone habits. “They’re into tech, and yet they’re putting a light on their own tech,” he told Us Weekly.
12. HOME IMPROVEMENT and GALAXY QUEST remain his favorite jobs, full stop. Of all his credits, Allen says nothing has topped those two — not even LAST MAN STANDING, which he loved. “Never have I enjoyed, outside of HOME IMPROVEMENT and maybe moments of GALAXY QUEST, one of these jobs,” he said during a Fox press panel, according to ScreenRant.
13. Ending LAST MAN STANDING actually made him sick. Allen has said the show’s conclusion in 2021 hit him harder than he expected. “I had health problems letting go of this one,” he admitted, according to ScreenRant.
14. He was blindsided by ABC’s decision to cancel it in 2017. Fox eventually revived the show, but Allen never got a clear explanation for the network’s earlier move. “There’s nothing more dangerous right now than a likable conservative,” he told Norm Macdonald on the comedian’s podcast, according to Deadline.
15. He still calls the whole nine-year run a gift. When the series finally wrapped for good, Allen’s reaction wasn’t bitterness — it was thanks. “I’ve been one lucky dude to have been part of LAST MAN STANDING,” he said.
16. His new sitcom, SHIFTING GEARS, is closer to who he actually is. Allen plays Matt, a widowed classic-car restorer, and says the role has less of the swagger of his past characters. “This is not a Mike Baxter-type guy,” Allen told Parade. “I think of Bob Fosse every time I’m on set screaming about stuff.”
17. He still checks himself before he starts believing his own hype. Allen has a habit of quoting the 13th-century poet Rumi to himself whenever he thinks he has life figured out. “Every time I ‘think’ I have the answer I remind myself of this quote,” he posted, quoting Rumi. “You’re seasick from the storms of ego, because you make everything stormy.”
Taken together, these 17 facts sketch a fuller picture than any single Tim Allen punchline could. He’s the guy who grunted his way through HOME IMPROVEMENT and voiced a plastic space ranger into a household name, sure. But he’s also a man who did hard time, got sober, buried a father he lost as a boy and only recently found the words to forgive the man responsible. For Movieguide® readers who’ve followed Allen through three decades of Santa suits and sitcom sets, that’s the real story behind the tool belt.
