Get ready for an inside look at BAND OF BROTHERS in this upcoming documentary about the making of the series.

“We were blessed and fortunate enough to be able to portray lives of absolutely true heroes,” actor Neal McDonough said in a trailer for the documentary, BAND OF BROTHERS: LEGACY. “To jump into those shoes was the most daunting task I could ever possibly imagine.”

Actor Damian Lewis added, “We were a group of actors, really wanting to do good work, wanting to do the thing right.”

The trailer also included interviews with the real-life soldiers who inspired BAND OF BROTHERS. One said, “I don’t think I’m a hero. [It was] what needed to be done at the time, and I done it.”

“BAND OF BROTHERS: LEGACY serves as a tribute to the groundbreaking series that helped preserve the story of Easy Company and deepened public appreciation for the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation,” a press release from HBO Max stated, sharing that the doc includes interviews with Lewis, Ron Livingston, Michael Cudlitz, Capt. Dale Dye, USMC (Ret.), David Schwimmer and many more.

The statement continued, “Through personal reflections and behind-the-scenes stories, participants revisit the experience of making the series and explore its lasting cultural resonance. BAND OF BROTHERS: LEGACY also includes never-before-seen archival footage and photographs of Easy Company and World War II.”

BAND OF BROTHERS is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and many of its actors are reflecting on what the series has meant to them over the years.

“BAND OF BROTHERS means everything to me,” Lewis recently told PEOPLE. “It was an incredible show to be part of. Its legacy has gone on and on and on. People adore it. It stands up. I’ve seen it recently. It stands up as a piece of drama.”

The actor continued, “I think…there is a pressure when you are playing people who existed in real life and did extraordinary things. You need to honor them the best way you can. That’s really what preoccupied all of us during BAND OF BROTHERS.”

McDonough has also spoken about the series’ production, telling Fox News that Tom Hanks gave the restless cast a pep talk that inspired them for the rest of production.

“He says, ‘Look, we all owe it to everyone in Easy Company, and everyone in World War II, to work our hardest because they gave their lives for our freedoms. The least we can do is work our tails off to tell the truth as hard as we can so we give honor to those men and women,’” he recalled.

McDonough continued, “We all realized Tom was right. They lived, breathed and died for what we have this day, freedom. None of us forgot about that, and as soon as the show came out, we realized Tom was right the whole time.”

BAND OF BROTHERS: LEGACY premieres Sept. 9 on HBO Max.
