Director Destin Daniel Cretton may be ready to swing back into Peter Parker’s world after turning SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY into a record-smashing hit.

“If we have our way, he certainly will be,” SPIDER-MAN franchise producer Amy Pascal told Deadline in August when asked whether Cretton would be involved in the next movie.

A newer Deadline report added weight to that hope. While breaking news about Cretton developing a HAWAII FIVE-O movie for Paramount, the outlet treated the next Spidey installment as inevitable and counted it among the director’s upcoming projects.

The wording stops short of an official announcement from Sony Pictures or Marvel Studios, and no deal, production date or release date for a fifth Tom Holland-led SPIDER-MAN movie has been confirmed. Still, the trade’s casual reference suggests Hollywood expects Cretton to remain in the director’s chair.

That chair comes with a crowded calendar. Cretton is also attached to the HAWAII FIVE-O project and a live-action NARUTO adaptation, while Pascal said in August that the next Spider-Man movie did not yet have a writers room.

“There are always plans. But right now, he’s going to rest after that global tour. He and Zendaya are going to take a good and restful victory lap, which they very much deserve,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Variety when asked about another SPIDER-MAN movie with Holland.

They have plenty to celebrate. Variety reported that BRAND NEW DAY had earned $2.4 billion worldwide by Labor Day weekend, ranking as the third-highest-grossing movie ever, and had held the domestic box office’s No. 1 spot for six consecutive weekends.

The juggernaut opened July 31 and delivered a $360 million domestic debut, edging past AVENGERS: ENDGAME for the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history. It also marked Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man and Cretton’s first trip through the franchise.

Cretton came to Peter Parker after directing SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS. Pascal said the creative team knew it could not top the three-Spider-Man spectacle of NO WAY HOME by simply going bigger, so Cretton steered the new chapter toward a more grounded story about isolation, connection and Peter’s stubborn instinct to do good.

“The thing about Destin is, everything with him comes from a place of authenticity, a place of emotion,” Pascal said.

That emotional current gave families something worth weighing beyond the eye-popping ticket totals. Movieguide®’s review awarded BRAND NEW DAY four stars for entertainment quality and praised Peter’s Christ-like willingness to risk his life for another person while urging an enemy to choose redemption over revenge.

The review also issued an Extreme Caution warning because the movie contains nearly 40 obscenities and profanities, including several abuses of God’s name. The heroism lands, but the language makes the movie a poor choice for children and younger teenagers.

For now, SPIDER-MAN 5 remains an expected sequel rather than a formally announced production. If Sony and Marvel get their way, though, the director who gave Peter Parker his biggest box office day may also guide whatever comes after his brand-new one.
