Every day, we’re bombarded with messages about what to believe, but how do we know which voices are actually worth giving our attention to? Savannah Bananas star RobertAnthony Cruz has the answer.

“According to the Bible, who on social media is worth listening to?” Cruz, better known as Coach RAC on social media, began a recent Instagram Bible study. “When a million different people are giving advice, I found that James 3:13-18 gives very practical wisdom.”

“Now let’s state the obvious: when this was written, social media didn’t exist. But boy, does it apply,” he continued.

“Do human beings naturally just pay attention to the people that are the most popular? And especially on social media, we assume that because something has a lot of engagement, then it must be true and wise,” he said.

“At least according to James in the Bible, that’s not how wisdom should be detected. Chapter 3, verse 13 says, ‘Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct, let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.’ So this idea of meekness or submissiveness is actually a mark of wisdom,” the athlete explained.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambitions in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but it’s earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits. It’s impartial and sincere.

“So, wisdom from above looks very different. True wisdom is not becoming the judge over all other people, but it’s being peaceable and gentle and open to reason and pure,” Coach RAC described.

Verse 18 says, “And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

So who should you pay attention to?

“If someone is constantly stirring up division and rage baiting, casting judgments on other people, then at the very least, they’re not displaying biblical wisdom,” Cruz stressed. “So, with all the voices out there, at least try to pay more attention to the peaceable ones.”

“Wisdom isn’t always found with the biggest followings. True wisdom from human beings should always be marked with humility,” he concluded.

The takeaway isn’t necessarily to disengage from social media altogether but to use discernment when scrolling. Real wisdom, Coach RAC suggested, rarely announces itself with the most followers or the most likes; it shows up quietly, in good conduct and a gentle spirit, waiting for those willing to look past the noise to notice it.
