Is Disney+ Launching a Free Streaming Tier?

Disney+ is reportedly considering a free tier for part of its library as ad-supported viewing continues to grow.

“It’s unknown which shows or movies would be included or when the streaming platform would consider launching the offering,” TechCrunch reported.

The report, which cited Business Insider, says Disney chief product and technology officer Adam Smith discussed the possibility during a company town hall. Disney has not announced a launch date, a final lineup or a formal plan for the potential free option.

That uncertainty matters for families who already sort through a crowded collection of subscriptions. A free Disney+ tier could make some programming more accessible, but it would likely arrive with advertising and a limited selection rather than the full subscription catalog.

The possible move would put Disney+ in more direct competition with free services such as YouTube and Tubi. Those platforms offer a mix of advertising-supported entertainment, and their growth reflects the pressure households feel as monthly streaming bills rise.

TechCrunch cited Nielsen data showing free streaming services accounted for 18.7% of U.S. television watch time in April 2026. That share rose from 16.8% in April 2025 and 12.7% in April 2024, a clear sign that viewers are paying attention to price as well as programming.

Disney already gives subscribers several choices, including ad-supported and premium plans. A free tier would take that strategy further by inviting non-subscribers to sample selected shows and movies before deciding whether to pay for a larger library.

Other services have tested versions of that approach. TechCrunch noted that Apple TV+ and Paramount+ allow non-subscribers to watch certain free episodes, while Netflix and Amazon Prime Video remain key subscription competitors.

The business case is easy to see: free access can expand an audience, create advertising inventory and introduce viewers to franchises that may lead them toward a paid plan. Yet the question for families is not merely whether a platform costs less, but what rhythms of viewing it encourages at home.

A lower barrier to entry can be helpful when parents want to choose a particular program together. It can also make endless browsing easier, especially when recommendations and autoplay keep asking viewers to stay one more episode.

Movieguide® readers can use a possible free tier as a reminder to set the household rules before the app opens. Choosing a movie intentionally, watching with children when possible and making room for conversation afterward can matter more than the price shown on a subscription page.

Disney has not confirmed the report or identified titles for a free catalog. Until it does, viewers should treat the idea as an option under consideration, not a promised feature, and keep an eye on whether any future announcement explains the advertising, parental controls and library limits.

The streaming market keeps changing, but family discernment remains personal. A free service may reduce a bill, yet wise viewing still begins with the people in the room deciding what deserves their attention and when it is time to put the remote down.
