Christian singer-songwriter Jamie MacDonald spent years waiting tables, caring for her estranged father and singing with women in prison before she signed her first major record deal at 40.

“I signed a record deal at 40 years old, and most people think, like, they turn 30 or whatever and it’s, like, over for them,” MacDonald said. “But I think what I love about my story is that, like, I can encourage a lot of people that it’s not too late and God can still, like, make something amazing out of all the random pieces.”

MacDonald shared her story with “Stay True” podcast host and author Madison Prewett Troutt in an Aug. 24 episode about trusting God’s timing. Her answer to feeling behind did not begin with a career shortcut. It began with learning to serve wherever God placed her.

A January Billboard profile traced MacDonald’s journey from a broken home to homelessness and addiction. After friends overdosed, died or went to prison, she remembered an encounter with Jesus at church camp and prayed for God to show her whether He still had a plan for her life.

MacDonald said she began reading the Bible while living in a house with drug dealers, then returned to church and slowly let God rebuild her life. She later served on the mission field, waited tables for about 15 years and sang background vocals for Christian artists, work that a K-LOVE profile says included projects by Anne Wilson and Zach Williams.

She moved to Nashville in 2018 hoping to pursue music, but her plans stopped when the COVID-19 pandemic began and her father’s Parkinson’s disease and dementia worsened. MacDonald drove to Georgia expecting to stay a few weeks and became his full-time caregiver until his death in 2023.

Near the end of his life, MacDonald wrote in her journal that she wanted to sing again without chasing the music industry, and she thought it would be meaningful to sing in a prison. About a week later, she recalled, someone invited her to perform with a women’s prison choir that had already learned one of her songs.

“I saw how much it helped my dad in his, like, weakest moments, and then I saw it keeping these girls alive behind bars and just, like, keeping them filled with hope,” she said. “They’re clinging to these Christian songs on the radio.”

The women became her friends and support system after her father died. Their hunger for songs about Christ clarified MacDonald’s purpose: she wanted to reach people who needed truth more than she wanted the industry to understand her style.

MacDonald returned to Nashville with that conviction, and Capitol Christian Music Group announced her signing in November 2024. Her first radio single, “Desperate,” later spent seven weeks atop Billboard’s Christian AC Airplay chart, while “Left It in the River” gave her a second No. 1 before her self-titled debut album arrived in January 2026.

“If I’m going to be here six days a week, this is my mission field. This is where God has me right now. So, let me be faithful here,” MacDonald said of her years as a waitress.

That daily obedience taught her contentment long before the chart success. Billboard later confirmed that “Desperate” became her first Christian AC Airplay No. 1, but MacDonald told Troutt that the deeper test came earlier.

“With or without the dream, like, was He enough?” MacDonald asked.

MacDonald’s road did not move at the entertainment industry’s preferred speed, and that became part of its purpose. For anyone staring at somebody else’s timeline, her story offers a steadier question: Where can I be faithful to God today?
