Three months after NASCAR legend Kyle Busch’s death, his brother Kurt Busch recalled their last moments together.
“I was there at the hospital; I was there all day, hoping, praying, hoping for a turnaround,” Kurt told TODAY’S Craig Melvin.
Kyle died on May 21 at the age of 41 from severe pneumonia, which then turned into sepsis. His death was very unexpected.
“I said, ‘I got you man, Come on. I got you. I got you, Come on. Be strong,’” Kurt recalled. “It just wasn’t fair.”
In the months since his death, Kurt is learning to manage his grief.
“There is no book; there is no outline on what we’re supposed to do right now,” he said.

Along with his brother, Kyle left behind his wife, Samantha Busch, and their two children, son Brexton, 11, and daughter Lennix, 4.
Brexton, who races Late Model stock cars, carries on his father’s legacy, and his uncle is stepping in to mentor him. Brexton finished sixth at Bowman Gray over the weekend.
“6th at Bowman Gray!! I know why they call it the Madhouse now, that was a slug fest! I was third at one point and eighth another. Definitely think we had Top 3 speed, wish we had the results to show for it in front of such a great crowd. Had a blast tho, can’t wait to do it again next year!” Brexton shared on Instagram.
“He’s a prodigy,” Kurt told Melvin of his nephew. “He was on gas even before all of this, right? He can be a big star in the world of motorsports. He’s 11 but he’s already racing like an 18-year-old. So, it’s time to be around a bit more.”
The Bowman Gray Stadium honored Kyle’s legacy, too.
“Last night was so much more than a race. It was a celebration of Kyle, the sport he loved so deeply and the racing community that meant so much to him,” Samantha posted on Instagram earlier this week. “Seeing everyone come together at Bowman Gray to honor Kyle, support grassroots racing and carry on something he cared so much about was incredibly special.”
She thanked her late husband’s fans for their continued support.
“Thank you to everyone who continue to pray for us, who lift the kids and I up during this time and who continue to share their memories of Kyle. He loved racing, he loved the fans and I know he would be so proud to see everyone continuing to race on in his honor,” Samantha wrote.
Though Busch family continues to mourn Kyle’s death, their passion for honoring his life and legacy is inspiring.
