Although an injury sidelined New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson from the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, that didn’t stop him from proclaiming his faith.
A video posted to social media captured Henderson leading several teammates in prayer before they took to the field on Sept. 9. The Patriots lost 10-13 to the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Henderson’s heart for the Lord on the field isn’t surprising. He often uses his platform, especially on social media, to glorify God.

“Walking with Jesus doesn’t guarantee an easier life, it doesn’t guarantee that things would always go our way,” the athlete wrote in a post on Instagram in June. “Sometimes God may send us into a storm, sometimes He may lead us into a valley. But it’s in those moments where we learn to trust Him and we learn to surrender, which isn’t easy. It’s in those moments where we can see how weak we are without Jesus and how much we need Him.”
“God doesn’t abandon us in the storm or valley and He’s not working against us. He’s with us in every moment and He’s for us,” the second-year NFL star continued. “In those moments, sometimes it’s hard to see what He’s doing, but we have to walk by faith and we have to hold on to His promises. The storms and the valleys that He takes us through at times are not meant to destroy us, but it’s to draw us closer to Him and to build us up into the man and the woman He’s calling us to be. Don’t let go, keep holding on!”
Henderson pointed his followers to 2 Corinthians 12:9, which reads, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Henderson sat out all three practices last week before their matchup against the Seahawks. According to ESPN, he is “New England’s No. 2 option at running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson, last practiced Aug. 24. After slipping on a run play, he left the field with athletic trainers.”
There is no timetable to when Henderson will return to the field, but he will continue to be the light that his teammates need whether he plays or not.
The Patriots take on the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
