Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson excelled in his first NFL game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Saturday.
Simpson, who was the 13th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, completed “21 of 25 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions,” ESPN reported.
There’s only so much you can replicate in practice, so the athlete wasn’t sure what to expect in his first game. However, he felt calm, which he attributed to a test from his dad before the game.
“I knew that I was gonna play, and I told him, I was like, ‘Hey, like I’m gonna play a good portion of the game.’ And you know, my dad just talked to me like I was 4 years old again,” Simpson told the media, per Christhlete. “Just ‘Hey, catch every snap, make the easy ones easy and go do what you love. And I love you.’”
“He sends me a Bible verse every time, and just a quote to give glory back to Him [God], and it was just really cool,” the quarterback continued. “I felt calm, felt really comfortable, and you know, especially when I have family members texting me, it’s a comforting feeling.”
Many criticized the Rams for choosing Simpson, but so far, the young quarterback has proven he was the right choice.

“I thought he took what the defense gave him,” head coach Sean McVay said of Simpson’s performance after the game. “I thought he read the plays out, read with his feet. I thought he did a really good job overall. … I thought he kept the ball in play. That’s the biggest thing is keeping the ball in play.”
When asked how he deals with competing as the backup quarterback to long-time NFL star Matthew Stafford, Simpson stayed humble.
“I really don’t get into that, honestly,” he explained. “I really just try to be the best version of myself I can be and compete with myself. A lot of the time, people get caught up in ‘who is better than who’ and ‘who is going to get this spot’ and stuff. But at the end of the day, I’m just trying to prepare me for the future and try to stack days and [make] progress.”
For Simpson, the NFL doesn’t come with a ton of pressure because he knows that no matter what happens, he is a son of God.
“I know where I’m going,” he said on an episode of “The Walk” podcast. “I have full confidence knowing where I’m going. That’s how I see it. We’re His children, and we’re here to spread His Word because of what He did. But at the same time, if the Lord Jesus comes back tomorrow, like in Revelation, and the earth dissolves like that, I know what’s going to happen. The question is, do you?”
Whether he’s the starting quarterback come September or the back-up, Simpson continues to keep his head down and do what he loves, all while glorifying God.
