Sean Lowe and his wife, Catherine Giudici Lowe, are asking Bachelor Nation for prayers after a frightening week with their family.

“This past week has been a rough one for the Lowes,” Catherine wrote in a July 21 Instagram post, revealing that the couple’s 8-year-old son, Isaiah, had just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The Lowes, who fell for each other on Season 17 of THE BACHELOR back in 2013, explained that their pediatrician caught the diagnosis almost by accident. Isaiah had lost 11 pounds since his last visit and had been drinking and urinating far more than usual, symptoms the couple had chalked up to a growth spurt and a scorching Texas summer.

“Otherwise healthy and active, she ran some tests and sent us to the emergency room based on those alarming results,” Catherine wrote. “Thankful for the nurses, doctors and staff who gave us a 4 year college education on his condition in 4 days.”

Isaiah spent four days at Children’s Hospital adjusting to a completely new routine of insulin injections and blood-sugar checks. Catherine said her son handled it all with a grace that surprised even her.

“This tough boy has endured countless injections, four days away from his home and a lifestyle and routine that feels very very foreign,” she continued. “He’s done all this without losing his playful spirit and a joy that doesn’t make sense. A lot of tears, pain and confusion too, but he has been a trooper, no question about it. Isaiah is my new hero and I am so proud to be his mama. Prayers for him, his siblings and his parents are welcomed as we navigate this new normal.”

Bachelor Nation showed up for the family in the comments. Fellow franchise alum Trista Sutter wrote, “So sorry that you have a baby that is struggling, but he is so lucky to have you right by his side. Prayers up for continued guidance that you trust!” Lesley Murphy, who competed for Sean’s heart on his season, called Isaiah “so lucky to have you as his guiding light.”

Plenty of the support came from parents who had walked the same road. One commenter, whose own son was diagnosed at age 8, told Catherine the learning curve is steep but manageable — her son is now 12, plays sports, and switched from daily injections to an insulin pump. Another pointed the family toward Breakthrough T1D, formerly known as JDRF, for resources and community.

Sean and Catherine’s romance has long been one of Bachelor Nation’s genuine success stories. He proposed to her in the Season 17 finale, and the two married in a televised wedding on January 26, 2014. They’ve since built a family of five with sons Samuel, 10, and Isaiah, 8, alongside daughter Mia, 6.

Sean has never been shy about the role his faith plays in that family. His 2014 memoir, For the Right Reasons: America’s Favorite Bachelor on Faith, Love, Marriage, and Why Nice Guys Finish First, detailed how he held to his Christian convictions on sexuality even as producers pushed reality TV’s usual script, and Movieguide® readers have long appreciated Bachelor Nation’s rare example of a couple whose on-screen romance actually held up.

That same instinct shows up in how the Lowes are handling this diagnosis. Asking for prayers wasn’t a throwaway line in Catherine’s post — it’s consistent with a family that has talked openly about leaning on faith through hard seasons, both the televised kind and the ones that play out in a hospital room. For now, Isaiah is home, adjusting to his new normal, and his parents are trusting that the same community that rooted for their love story will keep rooting for their son.
