Becoming a mother taught Australian worship singer and songwriter Taya Gaukrodger, known professionally as TAYA, to extend more grace to the parents who raised her.
“Being a parent, you also have so much grace then for your own parents,” TAYA said in a GodTube interview. She added that motherhood helped her see her parents as people who had simply done the best they could.
That realization came in the small, funny flashes of recognition that parents know well. TAYA said she sometimes looks at her son and sees both the good qualities and the stubborn streak he inherited from his mom, prompting her to ask the Lord how to care well for the life He entrusted to her.
“I will forever be a mom now,” she said. “That won’t change, and I get this opportunity to steward this beautiful life.”
TAYA and her husband, Ben Gaukrodger, announced their first child, Bo Benaiah Gaukrodger, in December 2023. Movieguide® reported at the time that TAYA viewed his name as a reminder that their son ultimately belongs to God and that they should encourage him to obey the Lord.
Motherhood arrived alongside several other turns. The singer, whose voice introduced millions to Hillsong United songs “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” and “Touch the Sky,” left Hillsong Church after a decade on staff in 2023, and she built a solo ministry with her husband and son.

At the time the interview was recorded, TAYA said the family did not have music management. They were weighing new opportunities, preparing an album and finding a new church where they could build relationships and accountability.
“Our heart is to serve in this house,” she said, explaining that they wanted to put down roots and flourish in God’s house.
Her career had already crossed continents. Capitol Christian Music Group noted that the Australia native moved to Sydney in 2010 to pursue music, volunteered in Hillsong’s youth and young adult ministries, and later toured the world.
TAYA’s second solo album, THE REMINDER, arrived April 4, 2025, with 12 songs. Its central subject matched what she said God was teaching her away from the stage: His character does not shift when a family’s circumstances do.
“And what’s beautiful is God has seen this entire thing. He doesn’t change,” TAYA said. She felt God reminding her not to worry because He would meet every need.
Her honesty did not end with a tidy picture of confidence. She hoped listeners would recognize that she still needs to remember the truths she sings.
“I’m very much a human,” she said. “And sometimes we just need those reminders of the faithfulness of God, that he doesn’t change.”
In a Decision Magazine profile, TAYA admitted she had to trust God more deeply as a wife and mother while their little boy reshaped the family’s plans. She framed that dependence not as a detour from ministry, but as the everyday place where faith becomes real.
For Christian parents, that is an encouragingly ordinary picture of stewardship. Children expose both our gifts and our rough edges, but they can also soften our judgments of the parents who once faced the same daunting assignment with us.
In TAYA’s season of change, motherhood did not erase the unknowns. It taught her to meet them with grace, rootedness and deeper confidence in the God who does not change.
