Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST will have a theatrical return Sept. 10-17.
The re-release comes ahead of THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST: PART ONE’s May 2027 release.
Tickets are on sale now for THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST’s return, which is newly remastered in 4K definition with Dolby Atmos sound. Attendees will also get to see a sneak peek of the next movie.
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is one of the biggest faith movies of all time. It was the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film of all time for 20 years. It also earned three Academy Award nominations and grossed over $610 million worldwide, per News Nation.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is a must-see movie, beautifully directed, powerfully acted, and with terrific sound. Filmed in Latin and Aramaic, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST has a foreign sensibility… Those who see it will understand, perhaps for the first time, the price that Jesus paid to forgive us our sins.”

“THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST remains one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created,” Kevin Grayson, president of worldwide distribution for Lionsgate, said in a statement. “For millions of people, it was far more than a film — it became a powerful shared cultural and faith experience. Bringing it back to theaters in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it in an entirely new way while inviting a new generation to discover it in theaters for the very first time.”
THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST: PART ONE was completed in May of this year. PART TWO is already scheduled to debut in May of 2028, Fox News Digital reported.
Gibson said in a statement about the next movie, “This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”
Co-writer Randall Wallace said the movie will display things “nobody’s ever seen. And yet I believe it’ll be, in a certain way, the most orthodox telling. It’ll be the most consistent telling of the overall belief, the awe and the mystery that Christians experience when they experience the Resurrection.”
THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST: PART ONE comes out on May 6, 2026.
