Former United States director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard revealed that her husband, Abraham Williams, has gone through a difficult cancer treatment and recovery.

“Earlier this year, my husband Abraham was diagnosed with a very rare bone cancer. This has been a challenging time for us and is hard to talk about,” she captioned in a video of herself sharing her husband’s health journey. “So many of you have reached out asking how he’s doing, and sharing your prayers and well wishes with us.”

Her husband was diagnosed with a “one in a million” kind of bone cancer — sacral chordoma. He had to undergo surgery to remove part of his sacrum and tailbone to remove the cancer. His recovery has been difficult as he’s had to learn how to use his body without these pieces.

After the procedure, he didn’t take any narcotics and pushed through the pain. Today, he’s doing physical therapy and is doing well.

“We are so grateful to God for His unconditional love, for being our shelters, for being our peace and our strength,” Gabbard said.

At the end of the video, Gabbard wiped tears away while her husband hugged her in a sweet and vulnerable moment.

In May, Gabbard left the Trump administration to care for Williams, PEOPLE reported.

“Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage,” she said at the time. “His strength and love have sustained me through every challenge. I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.”

President Trump told her that he understood her position and commended her for doing an “incredible job” in her one year as director of national intelligence.

In 2024, Williams shared photos of Gabbard and said, “It is hard for me to describe the level of selflessness that Tulsi embodies. To say she is not a politician is an understatement. She is a patriot who loves this country, who does what she does because she cares about people. I have seen this everyday of the almost 10 years we have been married… I love you ❤️”

Gabbard’s decision to step away from her role during Williams’ battle shows the importance of having loved ones by your side. She felt like the decision was the best thing for both of them. Hopefully they will continue to be strong support systems for each other, and Williams will stay healthy.
