“Fancy Like” singer Walker Hayes got a little inspiration from man’s best friend for his latest single.
“I think God gave us the coolest little friends,” he said of his new song, “Love is a Four-Legged Word,” in an interview with Parade. “They’re very important to me and my family. I’m almost 47, and I don’t remember a time where I either [didn’t] have a dog or I wasn’t trying to get one.”
The song is meant to describe his deep bond with his dogs over the years, including his favorite dog, Skeeter.
“The sub-hook of the song says, ‘Skeeter’s my dog and I’m his human,’” Hayes said. “I think any dog owner will understand …there’s just a special bond that you have with your pets.”
Speaking to Men’s Journal, Hayes said he often wonders “what is life like from their [dogs’]perspective? Do they know how much I love them?”

“If I come in and I’m carrying a lot on my plate and I’m kind of self-absorbed in my struggles of the day or whatever, I can feel that they know,” he said. “They will nuzzle up as if to say, ‘Hey, it’s all good. I’m here.’”
The singer shared that he hopes “Love is a Four-Legged Word” resonates with dog owners.
“I hope it embodies the normal actions that you do with a dog, but I also hope that there’s that bond,” Hayes said. “If you have a bond with a dog, you just get it.”
Skeeter is also part of an upcoming animated series Hayes is working on with his children, titled WALKER’S WOODS.
“The first episode has been scripted and the entire song is there,” he shared with Parade. “The animation world is a great universe for me creatively.”
This isn’t the first time Hayes has dipped his toe into the onscreen world. In 2023, it was announced that a scripted drama based on his life was in the works at Untitled Entertainment.
“My wife Laney and I have had such a wild life and love story,” he said in a statement at the time. “We reflect all the time together, wondering how in the world we got here. The amount of brokenness versus beautiful lends itself to endless amounts of stories to explore. I can’t think of an emotion we haven’t felt together. We never could have imagined a company like Untitled would want to create a scripted drama about our life. Their willingness to welcome and include us in the process has been beyond encouraging.”
