Paramount and Activision’s CALL OF DUTY movie finally has a setting: director and co-writer Peter Berg announced Saturday at Fanatics Fest in New York City that the film will live inside the franchise’s MODERN WARFARE universe.
“I told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it’s right,” Activision head Rob Kostich said. Kostich, who brokered the partnership with Paramount chairman and CEO David Ellison, has said the studio wanted the human element locked down before chasing scale and spectacle.
Movieguide® has tracked this project since screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind YELLOWSTONE, LANDMAN and LIONESS, first signed on to write it. When the deal came together, Ellison could barely contain himself: “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is a dream come true,” Ellison told reporters, adding that he’s logged countless hours across the franchise himself. That kind of personal investment from the top of the studio is worth noting for families wondering whether this adaptation will honor its source material or simply cash in on it.
Berg and Sheridan aren’t strangers to each other’s work. The pair previously teamed up on the Oscar-nominated HELL OR HIGH WATER, a stripped-down crime drama built on the same unglamorous, working-class authenticity that made YELLOWSTONE a hit. Berg’s other directing credits, including FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, LONE SURVIVOR and DEEPWATER HORIZON, lean the same direction: real stakes, real people, minimal gloss.

Berg didn’t reveal plot specifics, but the MODERN WARFARE setting narrows the possibilities considerably. Longtime players will recognize Captain John Price, the masked operative Ghost and Task Force 141 sergeant Soap MacTavish, along with the franchise’s reigning villain, Vladimir Makarov. Whether the movie adapts one of the existing games beat for beat or simply borrows their world remains an open question.
CALL OF DUTY has sold more than 500 million copies since the original game launched in 2003, and Paramount’s June 30, 2028 release date was chosen deliberately to land on the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The next mainline game, MODERN WARFARE 4, arrives Oct. 23 and drops players into a war between North and South Korea, a reminder that this corner of the franchise has never played things lightly.
That intensity is worth a note for parents. The MODERN WARFARE games have long carried a Mature rating for graphic violence and language, and nothing so far confirms the movie will pull back on either front. Sheridan and Berg have both built careers on restraint and craft rather than shock for its own sake, which offers some reassurance, but families should wait for an actual rating before assuming anything about who in the house is ready for it.
No cast has been announced, and Paramount hasn’t said whether the story will adapt a specific MODERN WARFARE plot or chart new territory around Captain Price and Task Force 141. The 2028 release date isn’t moving, though, which gives CALL OF DUTY fans, and the parents raising the next generation of them, plenty of time to decide how they’ll approach it when it finally arrives.
