Should You Watch It?

This is a funny, enjoyable family movie with heartfelt moments and a strong emphasis on loving family despite its flaws. The jokes about getting along with silly, goofy relatives may feel familiar, while the themes of forgiveness and sacrifice give the comedy a redemptive center.

The main concern is age-specific. Some monster characters may scare younger children, even though many become human for most of the movie. The references to magic, including a magic potion and a magic broom, are also worth noting for families who want to discuss those ideas.

If your family enjoys animated comedy and your younger children are not easily frightened by monsters, this is a worthwhile choice; otherwise, parents may want to wait until they are older.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Count Drac is finally ready to retire and give his beloved hotel to his daughter, Mavis. Her human husband, Johnny, is thrilled—but Drac changes the rules and says Johnny must be a monster to take over.

Johnny seeks a potion to transform himself, while Drac tries to stop him. When the potion affects both of them, father-in-law and son-in-law must travel together through a rainforest to find more. Their family differences may be as difficult to overcome as the journey itself.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this one is very funny, heartfelt, well done, and entertaining. The movie’s humor gives family members a playful way to recognize the challenge of getting along with one another, no matter how silly and goofy they may be.

Its heartfelt moments strengthen the comedy, while the emphasis on forgiveness and sacrifice gives the story more emotional weight than simple slapstick. The result is an enjoyable animated movie with a clear family focus.

The Worldview

The movie presents a strong moral worldview centered on family, love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. It encourages people to love their family members despite their flaws and suggests that forgiveness and self-giving can help repair strained relationships.

The film also includes references to magic, including a magic potion and a magic broom. Characters are said to have magic within them, so families who are discerning about magical ideas may want to discuss how those elements fit with biblical beliefs.

At its heart, the film values family relationships and the work of overcoming differences. Scripture similarly calls believers to forgive one another: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
