What You Need To Know

HYPNOSISMIC is an animated Japanese movie set in the future where people have decided to use rap battles to eliminate violence and resolve conflicts. In the story, six male teams go up against each other in an epic rap battle to decide who will control Japan. The winner will face the female-led organization KOTONOHATOH, the current people in power, to determine who stands on top. The movie is interactive. During each screening, viewers use their smartphones to choose between 48 different paths and seven different endings.

HYPNOSISMIC contains high quality animation with bright colors, unique settings, interesting character designs, and high-octane performances. Also, the music, which is perhaps the movie’s most important element, was done really well. Each team has its own distinct voice(s) and sound. Since the movie is interactive, HYPNOSISMIC feels like a live competition. With 48 different paths and seven endings, each screening ends up with a different movie every time. This makes the movie an extremely engaging experience.

However, HYPNOSISMIC depicts a power system that lean towards paganism. For example, the performers use a special microphone (the “Hypnosis Mic”) that can directly influence people. The Hypnosis Mic summons avatars representing each singer’s unique beat and delivers lyrics that affect the human soul or spirit. HYPNOSISMIC also has more than 20 obscenities and profanities and a few suggestive moments. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

The Content Guide

Content Summary

Dominant worldview: Soft pagan worldview, power system is through a special microphone (the “Hypnosis Mic”) summoning musical avatar (such as a drum set, computer with speakers, skeleton head out of a coffin, etc.), the mic can also directly affect the human spirit, there was also a Buddhist monk rapper, but the movie didn’t dive deep into Buddhism

Foul Language

About 22 obscenities, one GD profanity and one or two light profanities

Violence

Light violence occurs when physical manifestation of lyrics strikes opposing teams, lyrics included some implied violence against the other rapper but more like examples of mean disrespect, known as a “dis,” than anything else

Sex

There’s an ambiguous, though suggestive, scene where a male rapper balances on all fours while holding his mic while another male rapper lies flat beneath him and then they reverse positions, and a female holds a tossing coin between her breasts

Nudity

One of the women in the female-led organization KOTONOHATOH has some clearly explicit cleavage, this character grabbed a coin between her breasts multiple times for the first round of rap battles to flip it and determine which team goes first

Alcohol Use

No alcohol use

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse

At least two characters regularly smoke cigarettes, but there are no drugs;

Miscellaneous Immorality

One rapper gambles a lot.
