Should You Watch It?

ABANDONED MINE delivers Halloween suspense without the cruel violence common to many horror movies. Its scares are built through pranks, atmosphere, and uncertainty rather than excessive gore or sexual content. The result is a tense movie that remains interesting because the characters cannot always tell where the tricks end and reality begins.

That restraint comes with real concerns. The movie includes intense scenes, titillating material, fake-blood violence, and significant discussion of Hinduism, ghosts, spirits, and possession. It also presents a spiritual crisis in which Brad prays to God without specifically naming Jesus Christ.

If you are choosing for teenagers or adults who can handle supernatural suspense, this is a worthwhile Halloween option; parents should use discernment for younger children.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Brad feels trapped in Happy Valley and persuades his former girlfriend, Laurie, to return from Stanford with her Hindu boyfriend, Ethan. Together with Brad’s friend Jim and Jim’s new girlfriend, Shannon, they explore the allegedly haunted Jarvis Mine.

Most of the group doubts that ghosts exist. Brad has prepared a series of Halloween pranks to frighten them, but the tricks become so intense that he finds himself caught inside the fear he created.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a strong, effective thriller with some room to improve. ABANDONED MINE is written and directed well, creating genuine fear without relying on excessive violence, gore, or sexuality. A sprinkling of wry humor helps keep the movie from becoming one-note.

The acting is compelling, especially as the characters struggle to discern the line between prank and reality. The intense scenes work because the filmmaking makes the danger feel convincing. The movie could be stronger with a clearer appeal to God in Jesus Christ, but its suspense and overall construction make it an interesting Halloween movie.

The Worldview

ABANDONED MINE presents a light, ultimately moral worldview in which Halloween pranks have consequences. The story treats fear, deception, and responsibility seriously, while also spending considerable time discussing ghosts, spirits, and possession. It includes discussion of Hinduism and a reference to dualistic materialism, along with a light Christian funeral reference to eternal life and some potentially aberrant theological implications.

The movie’s moral center is clearest in its cause-and-effect understanding: actions do not remain harmless simply because they began as jokes. Yet its spiritual framework is less distinctly Christian. In a crisis, Brad prays to God for help but does not specifically mention Jesus Christ, and the film gives substantial attention to Hindu and supernatural ideas without providing a clear Christian answer.

The film’s warning about consequences aligns with Scripture: “whatever one sows, that will he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Its spiritual questions also invite a more direct question about whom we call upon when fear closes in.
