Should You Watch It?

ACT OF VALOR earns its four-star rating with action scenes the source calls among the best and most realistic ever filmed. The movie also reaches beyond combat, offering a heartfelt, patriotic parable about the emotional toll of defending a country on soldiers and their families.

That strength comes with serious costs. The war violence is very strong, with bloody scenes, point-blank shootings, explosions, and implied torture. There is also plenty of strong foul language. The Christian content is only vague, while the film’s plea for religious tolerance and opposition to religious proselytizing is presented ambiguously.

If you are a mature adult who can weigh those concerns, this is WORTH THE TRIP — ADULTS ONLY.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Two Seal Team 7 leaders are called away from their married lives when their team is sent to Latin America. Their mission is to rescue a female CIA agent captured by a drug lord working with a Muslim terrorist.

What begins as a dangerous rescue operation uncovers a larger threat aimed at the United States. The Seals must follow the connection before the terrorists can carry out their plan.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is a standout action movie with unusual realism and emotional weight. ACT OF VALOR “sizzles” with amazing action, and its combat scenes are among the best ever filmed. The movie also gives its soldiers and their families a heartfelt story about the emotional toll of defending one’s country.

The dialogue can be stilted, but the film otherwise plays surprisingly well.

The Worldview

ACT OF VALOR strongly affirms patriotism, military service, and opposition to terrorism. It treats defending one’s country as morally serious while recognizing the emotional cost paid by soldiers and their families. Its moral framework is clear, but its Christian content is not: the soldiers’ faith is mentioned only vaguely and indirectly.

The film also includes a plea for religious tolerance and against religious proselytizing. The source describes this idea as vague and perhaps politically correct, while seeming aimed mostly at Islamic extremists who follow the Koran and take it seriously. That framing may leave Christian viewers wishing the film had distinguished more clearly between rejecting coercion and sharing religious truth.

The film’s casting gives it unusual authenticity: real, active-duty Navy Seals perform the key roles, while professional actors are mixed with amateurs. The result works surprisingly well despite some stilted dialogue.

The film’s central theme is sacrificial service for the sake of others. Scripture says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
