Should You Watch It?

AIR FORCE ONE delivers what its four-star rating promises: a creative premise, white-knuckle tension, riveting acting from Harrison Ford, good music and dialogue, and excellent cinematography. Its emotionally satisfying conclusion and portrayal of the President as a soldier-hero give the action a strong patriotic center.

The cost is substantial violence. The film begins with armed killings and continues with many machine-gun deaths, along with strangulation, a knife attack, and other threats. The Vice President’s appeal for Americans to pray for their President adds a laudable biblical element, but it does not make the film suitable for children or young teens.

If you are an adult who can handle the violence, AIR FORCE ONE is WORTH THE TRIP — ADULTS ONLY.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

President James Marshall travels aboard Air Force One with his family and advisers after the United States and Russia apprehend the murderous General Radek. Russian terrorists hijack the presidential jet and demand Radek’s release, threatening the passengers to force their way.

As the Vice President and the cabinet debate how to respond, President Marshall fights to protect his family, his passengers, and the country he leads.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is a highly entertaining, expertly made action thriller. Harrison Ford gives a riveting performance as the heroic President, and the movie’s creative premise keeps the story engrossing. Its moments of white-knuckle tension build toward an emotionally satisfying conclusion.

The production values are superlative. Good music and dialogue, along with excellent cinematography, strengthen the nonstop action and suspense. The premise is improbable in places, but the film’s craft and performances make the thriller work.

The Worldview

AIR FORCE ONE presents a pagan worldview of a terrorist attack on the presidential jet, but it also contains strong biblical and patriotic elements. The President is portrayed as a soldier-hero who personally confronts determined terrorists to protect his wife, daughter, passengers, and nation. The film upholds patriotism and presents justice as worth confronting international tyrants to secure.

The movie’s clearest biblical moment comes when Vice President Kathryn Bennett asks American citizens to pray for the President. That appeal recognizes a nation’s dependence on prayer during crisis, even though the film’s central conflict is resolved through heroic action and military courage.

The film’s central longing is for justice against murderous tyranny and protection for the innocent. Scripture likewise calls believers to pray for those in authority: “that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people” (1 Timothy 2:1).
