Should You Watch It?

GET BACK gives Paul McCartney's 1990–91 tour a strong big-screen presentation. His band is tight and versatile, the acoustical quality is excellent, and the music ranges from epic threnodies and character studies to romantic ballads and howling rockers.

The film's weakness is its framing. Director Richard Lester sometimes attaches political commentary to otherwise simple lyrics, while McCartney's peace-and-love grandstanding remains part of the Beatles' legacy. The documentary also contains hints of spiritual searching.

If you are an adult who wants to hear McCartney's music performed with skill, this is worth seeing. If you want a concert film without political or spiritual complications, choose carefully.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

GET BACK brings Paul McCartney's 1990–91 tour to the screen. The rock documentary spotlights McCartney's music and message, recreating songs from his Beatle days alongside poignant solo performances.

The set list moves across styles and moods, from “Band on the Run” and “Live and Let Die” to “Fool on the Hill,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Hey Jude,” “Can't Buy Me Love,” and “Back in the USSR.”

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means this is a good, musically rewarding documentary with a significant weakness in its presentation.

McCartney is a brilliant music stylist with an expert grasp of melody and creative song structure. His band is tight and versatile, recreating Beatles songs as well as performing poignant solos. The acoustical quality is also excellent, thanks to sound engineers Leslie Hodge and Jeff Cohen.

The film loses focus when Richard Lester affixes political commentary to simple song lyrics. That choice keeps GET BACK from being a cleaner celebration of the music.

The Worldview

GET BACK presents McCartney's music alongside his message. The film carries forward the Beatles' peace-and-love grandstanding, while director Richard Lester occasionally adds political commentary to otherwise simple lyrics. These choices can distract from the songs themselves.

The documentary also contains hints of spiritual searching. Its spiritual direction is not presented as surrender to Jesus Christ, which is why the film's message deserves discernment rather than simple approval.

The central question is where spiritual searching should lead. Scripture gives a clear answer: “salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
