INDEPENDENCE DAY
A thrilling alien invasion with prayer, family, and too much profanity.
Should You Watch It?
INDEPENDENCE DAY is exactly what its summary promises: a fun, roller-coaster B-movie with large-scale science-fiction spectacle. It moves with substantial emotion toward a satisfying climax, while celebrating heroism, marriage, restored relationships, family, prayer, and reclaimed faith.
The movie also carries a substantial burden of profanity and obscenity. There is a brief scene in a strip club, implied fornication, alcohol, smoking, and frightening violence involving aliens, explosions, and battles. Those elements could have been removed without damaging the story.
The good outweighs the bad. Watch it if your family can handle the PG-13 content and enjoys pure popcorn entertainment; younger children may be better served by something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESA massive spacecraft appears over the moon, and the Defense Department soon learns that an alien force is attacking Earth. A technician named David realizes the danger while the President struggles to respond.
As the aliens target major cities around the world, the President discovers that the government has been hiding a captured saucer in New Mexico. David proposes a desperate plan that may give humanity one chance to fight back.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means a genuinely entertaining film with clear flaws. INDEPENDENCE DAY draws on the science-fiction movies of the 1950s, when invading aliens were not friendly visitors but creatures determined to take over the world.
The result is thrilling and emotionally effective. The movie builds toward a satisfying climax, and its positive themes give the spectacle a moral center. It remains a big-budget B-movie, however, and the large amount of foul language and obscenity mars otherwise enjoyable entertainment.
The Worldview
INDEPENDENCE DAY presents a moral worldview in which good triumphs over evil, heroism is celebrated, marriages are restored, faith is reclaimed, and family matters. Prayer receives positive treatment, and the film includes Jewish and Christian prayers. It also mocks environmentalism, according to the source review.
The film’s view of government includes deception and hidden secrets, while its central conflict treats the alien invaders as an evil force threatening humanity. These themes align with a basic moral contrast between good and evil, though the review does not describe the film as a fully biblical account of either.
Its positive references to prayer and reclaimed faith point toward the truth that people should bring their fears and needs before God. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
