Should You Watch It?

SERENITY is a fast-moving science-fiction adventure with a genuine moral center. Captain Malcolm Reynolds cares for his crew and wants justice to prevail. Simon’s fierce loyalty to his sister drives him to risk his life for her. The story also opposes an evil government plan and stresses familial love and sacrifice.

The movie’s spiritual ideas are much less dependable. Characters pray to Buddha, psychic powers matter to the story, and one statement equates God with “a train that never comes.” The violence can be intense, while the foul language and sexual references remain minor.

Three stars means this is lively and watchable, though its many subplots, hazy focus, and silly one-liners weaken the experience. Adults who can exercise discernment may find worthwhile themes here; families with children or young teens should choose something else.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Five hundred years in the future, Captain Malcolm Reynolds commands a rogue crew that lost a galactic civil war. He takes any job necessary to keep them fed, even illegal ones.

When a young doctor and his dangerous, gifted sister come aboard, the crew becomes the target of a fierce headhunter. The fugitives carry knowledge that could expose the Universal Alliance, forcing Malcolm and his friends to run, investigate, and decide how much they are willing to risk for justice.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means SERENITY is entertaining but uneven. Its lively action and quick pace are its strongest filmmaking assets. The adventure moves quickly and is never boring.

The script is less successful. It contains many subplots and only a hazy focus, while silly one-liners sometimes sound as if they were lifted from a mid-1990s Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. The film has enough momentum and moral substance to make it worthwhile for discerning adults, but its writing keeps it from being stronger.

The Worldview

SERENITY stresses familial love, sacrifice, loyalty, and justice. Malcolm cares for his friends, and Simon’s devotion to River leads him to neglect his personal life and repeatedly risk his life for her. The characters also resist an evil government plan that seeks to create a peaceful paradise by “defeating sin.”

The movie’s spiritual framework is mixed. A Christian leader appears, though he advocates directionless belief. Another character prays to Buddha. River possesses psychic powers, and the film includes an anti-biblical statement equating God to “a train that never comes.” Though there is a positive mention of Christianity, these ideas may confuse younger viewers and depart from a biblical view of God.

The film’s longing for justice and sacrificial family love can point toward Scripture’s call to “love one another with brotherly affection” (Romans 12:10). Its human solutions, however, cannot replace the biblical hope found in God’s redeeming work.
