VERONICA MARS
A clever, crude mystery revival best reserved for discerning adults.
Should You Watch It?
If you already love the television series, this feature-film revival gives you clever dialogue, well-drawn characters, and a satisfyingly twisty mystery. Veronica’s loyalty to her father and true friends, along with her strong sense of justice, gives the story a moral center.
But the movie’s positive qualities are marred by about 26 obscenities, sexual content, crude jokes and other mature material. Its mixed pagan worldview and occasional violence add to the concerns. Casual viewers may find it fairly forgettable, with the feel of an above-average, extended television episode.
So, if you are a mature adult and a fan of the original series, it may be worth your time; for families with children or young teens, choose something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESVeronica Mars has grown up, moved to the East Coast, and is applying for a job at a top law firm. But when her former high school boyfriend is accused of murdering his girlfriend—a pop star and former classmate—Veronica returns to her small California hometown to help clear his name and find the real killer.
Her investigation coincides with the town’s 10-year high school reunion, which she had sworn never to attend. Meanwhile, her father has been deposed as sheriff, and the new sheriff is involved in shady activity.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means this is a well-made but limited film. The dialogue is clever, the characters are well drawn, and the mystery is satisfyingly twisty. Those strengths give longtime fans a worthwhile return to the series.
The movie is less effective as a standalone theatrical experience. Its limited budget means few action scenes, and its low-key tone makes it feel like an extended television episode. For casual viewers who do not know the original series, it may be fairly forgettable.
The Worldview
VERONICA MARS presents a strong mixed pagan worldview, but it also contains moral, redemptive and patriotic elements. The story values integrity, seeking truth, loyalty and justice. One patriotic character is proud of his military service and willing to sacrifice an important love relationship for a military mission. The movie also includes a positive reference to Jesus.
At the same time, the story includes a rumor that a woman was killed by the Catholic Church for sleeping with a priest. Veronica’s casual attitude toward her sex life and the running jokes approving casual sex weaken the film’s moral perspective. The characters also break many rules while solving the murder, and the town is marked by corruption, gang activity and other bad behavior.
The film’s desire to uncover truth is worthwhile, even though its moral framework is mixed. Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
