Should You Watch It?

If you want a tense action thriller with a clear moral center, The Ice Road delivers. Its heroes risk their lives to rescue 26 trapped miners, and the film strongly values compassion, family, courage, and sacrifice. The danger keeps coming, while Liam Neeson and Marcus Thomas give especially compelling performances.

The cost is substantial. The film contains about 46 obscenities and profanities, including two “f” words and nine strong profanities. It also features intense violence: explosions, crashes, shootings, fights, deadly falls, and a fatal struggle.

This is a well-made, exciting film with positive values, but its content is not suitable for children or young teens. Adults who can handle the language and violence may find the rescue mission worthwhile.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

After a methane explosion traps 26 miners in a Northern Canadian mine, a team of ice-road truckers and one mechanic must deliver heavy drilling equipment across a melting road. Mike McCann, his brother Gurty, driver Tantoo, and company leader Jim Goldenrod face cracked ice, stalled engines, pressure waves, and a race against time. But the team soon discovers that the road is not their only danger.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is a highly entertaining and effective action thriller. The movie creates tremendous jeopardy, with deadly situations arriving in a constant barrage. Its natural obstacles are only the beginning; human threats make the mission even more dangerous.

Liam Neeson fits the role of a compassionate, tough everyman who stands against evil to help others. Marcus Thomas gives a strong, compelling, and sympathetic performance as Mike’s brother, while Amber Midthunder and Laurence Fishburne also make strong contributions. Benjamin Walker is especially hateful and infuriating as the nearly indestructible villain.

The Worldview

The Ice Road presents a strong moral worldview with positive Christian and redemptive elements. It exalts compassion, family, caring for one’s brother, courage, and the willingness to risk your life for people in desperate situations. Sacrifice is central, including the idea that one person died to save another. A character also offers a soft prayer during a tense, life-or-death moment.

The film’s moral vision is complicated by its mixed economic themes. Three good characters own or hope to start a small company by earning significant money for dangerous work, while corrupt officials in a large mining company show greed and disregard for human life. The story also centers a tough Cree woman driver among the male truckers, presenting courage and loyalty across family and community lines.

The film’s central longing is to save vulnerable people through costly self-giving. Scripture says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

The Content Guide

The specifics — spoilers included by nature — so you can judge for your own family.

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements

Strong moral worldview with some positive Christian, redemptive elements extols compassion, family, taking care of one’s brother, risking one’s life to save other people in desperate situations, and sacrifice and includes one of the good guys says a soft prayer during one intense and potentially deadly situation and a line of dialogue saying that one character died to save the life of another character, plus some mixed capitalist and anti-capitalist elements (three of the good guys own a small company or want to start their own company by earning a significant amount of money for a dangerous job, but a large mining company has three corrupt officials running one of its local operations)

Foul Language

About 32 obscenities (one or two “f” words and one “h” word over final credits), nine strong profanities (two of them are “Sweet Jesus,” which seem borderline in context), and five light profanities

Violence

Strong action violence includes many scenes of intense jeopardy, trucks or truck trailers along an ice road are sucked into the water or swallowed by a pressure wave under the layer of ice on top of the road that can buckle and/or break the ice, man jumps into icy water to save his brother’s life, methane explosions cause a cave to collapse and trap some miners, villains shoot guns at good guys driving two trucks and try to drive trucks off an ice road, man starts an avalanche, one truck tumbles down a hill, trucks swerve in chase scenes along an ice road, a bridge is in danger of collapsing and causing a large truck to tumble into a chasm below, fighting between men, man punches two men in separate scenes, a winch is wound too tight and goes flying, villain punches a woman to knock her unconscious, some of the trapped miners want to kill the badly injured miners to save oxygen to breathe, main protagonist chokes a bad guy to death during a fight to the death, etc.
