Melissa Gilbert recently addressed the longstanding rumors about her relationship with LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE co-star Melissa Sue Anderson.
“I get a lot of @google alerts, so I read a lot of headlines. Especially lately,” Gilbert posted on Instagram, along with a headline about her onscreen sister. “Some are good. Some are dumb. Some are cruel. Some are lies. Some are true. This headline is the absolute truth.”
She continued, “Melissa is a true beauty. But it’s not just the outside of her, it’s what’s inside that makes her shine even more. She has been such a good and true confidante. Checking in, making sure I’m ok. I’m so glad that we have had the chance to reconnect and become real friends. As I’ve told her, we will forever be sisters. How could we not be? We hold each other’s childhoods in our hearts.”
Anderson played Laura Ingalls’ sister, Mary Ingalls.
The actress explained that “no one else had the experiences we shared” as children on the set of LITTLE HOUSE, adding, “Truth be told, I really looked up to her. She was so graceful and pretty and I was so buck-toothed and goofy. And now here we are. All this life experience under our belts. Absolute contemporaries. Fully able to appreciate our forever connection. Sending so much love to my ‘forever sister’ today.”

In years past, Gilbert described a more tumultuous relationship when they were children, revealing on an episode of WATCH WHAT HAPPENS LIVE! that she and Anderson “were just not too awfully close ever.”
“She was a hateful, horrid, mean, terrible, difficult…She hated me. She hit me. She knocked me off the wagon,” she added. “When I was 9, she literally elbowed me off of the covered wagon.”
However, last December, Gilbert shared that she and Anderson had healed any rifts left between them, writing in an Instagram post that “long, healing talks. Lots of reminiscing. Lots of catching up. Lots of laughter and a few tears” had all led to “reconnection with a sister.”
“I’m so happy to have Melissa Anderson back in my life,” she continued. “We share such an important history that no one else on earth truly understands. Just us Ingalls girls. The best part is, the past is now just that and we can move forward as the sisters/friends we always wanted to be. What a wonderful Christmas gift.”
LITTLE HOUSE fans are happy to hear that the newfound friendship between Gilbert and Anderson is still going strong.
