Cincinnati Reds rookie Sal Stewart declared “Jesus is King” after he led his team to a 5-4 comeback win over the St. Louis Cardinals last week.
“I’m trying to be as complete as I can be. I’m never a finished product, but I’m happy with where I’m going,” Stewart said.
Then, right before he ran back to the locker room, he yelled, with a smile stretched across his face, “Jesus is King.”
This isn’t the first time the athlete has proclaimed his faith on the diamond. At the beginning of the season, the first baseman spoke about what’s truly most important to him.
“How grateful am I?” Stewart asked in a conversation with a reporter after he scored six RBIs against the New York Yankees. “Jesus blessed me. I’m 22 playing at Yankee Stadium. My family is in the stands. I mean, Jesus is the greatest.”
He talked about his faith again in another post-game interview in April after he hit multiple home runs in one outing.

“Jesus Christ, He’s my Lord and Savior,” Stewart told MLB Network. “He’s changed my life so much. When I was younger, I always said [that] trying to get to the big leagues was always my dream. But my dream now is just to glorify His name. Without Him, I’m nothing, and I can’t do this. He gives me all the strength to do this.”
Stewart was the 32nd pick in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft. When his name was called on draft night, he was overcome with joy and gratitude.
“I have to start off by thanking my lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; without him, nothing is possible in my life!” Stewart wrote on Instagram. “I also want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey and supported me through this process it really means a lot! Thank you to my coaches, friends, teammates and people who want what’s best for me! Thank you to my cousins, uncles, and aunts for their nonstop support.”
He then thanked his family for their constant encouragement.
“Lastly, THANK YOU to my family. I LOVE YOU GUYS❤️❤️❤️ WE DID IT!! It’s very hard not to get emotional when thinking about this opportunity, but I know how much you guys have sacrificed for me and it never goes unnoticed!” he continued. “To the Reds community, you are getting my all. I promise to give everything I have and push to help my team win in any way I can! Let’s do it!!”
As Stewart continues to make an impact on the diamond, he consistently puts Christ first and sharing about His goodness.
