The hype around the live-action TANGLED is real, but fans will have to wait a few more years before they get another look at Rupunzel and Flynn Rider’s sweet love story.
Disney confirmed it would move forward with the remake of the 2010 animated flick last fall after putting production on pause “indefinitely” in April 2025.
Casting for lead roles quickly followed, with Teagan Croft playing Rapunzel and Disney star Milo Manheim securing the part of Flynn Rider.
“I really respect Flynn in this movie, it’s one of my favorites,” Manheim said of the role. “I’m kind of just nervous because I know that everybody loves Flynn and I’m trying to do my best at satisfying what people are expecting. But in another way, I can only be true to myself and try to embody the spirit of the cartoon.”
Disney confirmed Kathryn Hahn’s casting as Mother Gothel in March.
“You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action TANGLED,” the entertainment giant posted on X.

ANDOR star Diego Luna will play an original role for this version. Michael Gracey, who helmed THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, directs, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor penning the screenplay.
Production is underway in Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, and ScreenRant said fans can expect a release likely in 2028, though no official date has been confirmed.
The live-action version already found itself in controversy earlier this month after leaked set photos showed that the kingdom of Corona’s banners were blue and gold instead of purple and gold.
“Just found out they’re allegedly using blue banners instead of purple for corona in the tangled remake and now im starting my day off mad and upset,” someone commented.
“Cancel the whole movie omg,” another person wrote, “tangled is purple.”
While the color scheme isn’t necessarily the most important feature, the studio would do well to carry over TANGLED’s positive themes into the remake.
Movieguide® praised TANGLED’s “Strong redemptive worldview with allegorical and sacramental elements and themes that can be interpreted in a miraculous Christian, redemptive sense.”
“…the magical elements also have Christian, redemptive themes like ‘I see the light,’ which becomes a literal metaphor, and ‘save what once was lost,’ both of which can point to Christianity and Jesus (the ‘Light’ of the world),” the review said.
Disney has yet to confirm an official release date, but moviegoers hope the live-action version lives up to the original.
