DEAR COMRADES!
Tough, heartrending, and uplifting — for discerning adults.
Should You Watch It?
DEAR COMRADES! is a four-star film with a serious warning attached. Its portrait of a socialist government raising prices, lowering wages, crushing a workers’ strike, and covering up its crimes is tough, heartrending, and deeply compelling. Lyuda’s journey from party loyalty toward truth gives the history a personal cost.
That cost is substantial. The film includes 13 obscenities and two profanities, explicit nudity, cruel and bloody violence, adultery, constant smoking, drunkenness, and scenes of socialist repression. Those elements make this unsuitable for children and young teens.
If you are a discerning adult who can engage difficult material, this is a powerful and captivating drama. The practical answer: watch it as an adult, but do not make it a family film.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESIn 1962, Lyudmila “Lyuda” Syomina is a Communist Party official in Novocherkassk, a small industrial town in Communist Russia. She believes the State can do no wrong and enjoys privileges unavailable to ordinary citizens.
When the government raises food prices and lowers factory wages, workers—including Lyuda’s teenage daughter—go on strike. As party leaders call in armed troops, Lyuda must face a crisis that threatens both her family and her faith in the system she serves.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means DEAR COMRADES! is an extremely entertaining and captivating drama. The film steadily builds jeopardy as it reveals the workers’ desperation, the party leaders’ fear, and the government’s determination to control the truth.
Its greatest strength is Lyuda’s journey. Her personal concern for her missing daughter becomes an incredibly powerful dramatic revelation about the evils of socialism. The story is tough and heartrending, but also uplifting as truth begins to break through political lies.
The Worldview
DEAR COMRADES! presents a strong Christian, moral, anti-communist worldview in the midst of a socialist society where the government destroys people and society. It exposes a government that raises prices, lowers wages, intimidates workers, massacres strikers, buries evidence, and forces people to deny what they witnessed.
The film also contrasts socialist repression with Christian imagery and prayer. Lyuda’s father prays before an icon of the Madonna with the baby Jesus and tells her about Stalin’s starvation of his village. Lyuda’s party loyalty has taught her to repeat communist explanations, but suffering and personal loss press her toward the truth.
The film contains lots of atheistic content, while ultimately showing one comrade waking up and praying. Its central moral movement is away from ideological lies and toward truth. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
