Should You Watch It?

GAME NIGHT is a funny, clever action comedy with a great cast and positive messages about fighting for friends and family, even when you feel completely unequipped. Its pro-marriage and pro-children themes give the story a moral center, while its unique characters and unpredictable twists keep the familiar premise moving.

But the content is a serious cost. Strong foul language is frequent, the violence includes shooting and other dangerous accidents, and one sequence centers on strong lewd sexual jokes. The film’s heart may encourage you, but its language and sexual content may grieve or trouble you.

If you are an adult who can approach those concerns with discernment, GAME NIGHT is worth the trip; for children and young teens, choose something else.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Max and Annie share an obsession with games, and their weekly game nights with friends are the center of their social life. When Max’s successful, competitive brother Brooks hosts an elaborate kidnapping mystery at his mansion, the group expects an entertaining game.

Then real criminals arrive and take Brooks. The players do not realize the danger is genuine, so they continue treating the kidnapping as part of the evening’s entertainment. To save Brooks, they must solve the mystery before it is too late.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means GAME NIGHT is a highly entertaining comedy with enough craft and energy to overcome its familiar basic premise. Although its story resembles Bill Murray’s 1994 movie THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE, it remains clever and unpredictable.

The characters are distinctive, and many game enthusiasts may relate to Max and Annie’s competitive but charming relationship. The great cast, strong laughs, and halfway twists keep the movie from becoming a routine action comedy.

Still, too many jokes are crude, violent, or foul. The film is funny and well-constructed, but its humor frequently lowers the experience.

The Worldview

GAME NIGHT strongly emphasizes fighting for family and friends, even at personal cost. It also presents pro-marriage and pro-children messages. Those convictions give the movie a positive moral foundation.

The film’s moral emphasis is nevertheless marred by immoral content. Lying and cheating are present and rebuked, but the movie also includes strong foul language, violence, and a lewd sexual discussion. Its positive view of marriage, children, loyalty, and sacrificial friendship aligns with biblical values, even though the surrounding comedy often works against those values.

At its center is the call to stand by the people you love, even when you are not equipped for the fight. Scripture says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
