Should You Watch It?

KILLERS is a frothy romantic comedy mixed with action. The cast is charming and funny, and Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher have good chemistry. The movie also offers a positive picture of marriage: Spencer gives up his playboy spy life to settle down with Jen.

The content keeps this from being an easy family recommendation. There is brief but strong foul language, including one “f” word, along with discussion about sex. The violence includes hand-to-hand combat and shootings, though it is never very graphic. The source also notes alcohol use, nudity, and lying.

If you are choosing for teenagers or adults who can handle those elements, KILLERS offers light entertainment and some fun surprises. For younger children, choose something else. The practical answer: teens and adults can take the trip, with family discernment.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Jen meets Spencer while vacationing in Nice, France, unaware that he is a suave CIA assassin. After a whirlwind romance, they marry, and Spencer leaves the assassin business behind.

A few years later, the couple lives quietly in the suburbs of Atlanta. Then Spencer’s former life catches up with them, and neighbors and co-workers become threats. While dodging bullets, Jen learns the truth about her husband and joins him in trying to discover who wants them dead.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means KILLERS is enjoyable, well-cast light entertainment with noticeable limitations. The story offers unexpected twists, and the ending is not completely telegraphed, allowing for fun surprises.

The cast is the movie’s strongest asset. Heigl and Kutcher have good chemistry, though neither role is very deep. Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara give strong performances as Jen’s parents, while Rob Riggle is hilarious as a best friend turned assassin.

The result is a pleasant roller coaster ride rather than a deep or lasting film.

The Worldview

KILLERS presents marriage as a worthwhile alternative to a glamorous but empty playboy life. Spencer is a debonair spy who gives up that old existence to be with Jen and settle into a normal suburban marriage. Jen’s father is protective of her, and the married couple’s relationship is treated as loving and satisfying.

The film also includes some pagan and Romantic elements, along with a double-agent villain whose motives are never revealed or discussed. One supporting character is somewhat alcoholic. The story contains lying, but its strongest moral emphasis is on marriage, family protection, and leaving behind a destructive former life.

That central movement—from an old life toward faithful marriage—aligns with Scripture’s vision of covenant commitment: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife” (Genesis 2:24).
