Should You Watch It?

MY GIANT is a well-done family film that blends comedy and tragedy with a warm, redemptive message. Its friendship between Sammy, a talent agent, and Max, a giant from Romania, gradually turns both men away from self-centered ambition and toward love, forgiveness, family, and the life God has given them.

The film openly presents God as personal and caring. It shows prayer, confession, forgiveness, reconciliation, selflessness, and helping others as meaningful parts of a good life. The content is not spotless: families should be prepared for obscenities, profanity, minor violence, and a loud, repulsive vomiting scene.

If those concerns fit your family’s boundaries, this is worth seeing for its humor, emotional warmth, and biblical worldview.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Sammy, a second-rate talent agent from Chicago, survives a terrifying car wreck in the Romanian countryside after calling out to God. While recovering in a monastery, he meets Max, a 7-foot-7-inch Romanian giant who rescued him.

Sammy sees an opportunity to make Max famous in the movies. Max agrees to go to America if Sammy helps him search for Lilianna, the long-lost love he has never forgotten. Their journey becomes an unexpected friendship in which both men discover what truly brings happiness.

Is It Any Good?

Three stars means MY GIANT is an enjoyable, appealing film with some imperfections. It is charming and funny, while also offering a sensitive, emotional look at two men who help each other recognize what matters most.

The comedy and tragedy work together to create opportunities to laugh and cry. The first meeting between Sammy and Max is especially clever, humorously playing with familiar stories about giants while giving Max a poignant history. The film’s family-friendly entertainment and redemptive themes make it stronger than its rougher moments.

The Worldview

MY GIANT presents a biblical worldview centered on the existence of a personal God who protects people and gives their lives purpose. God is shown as answering prayer, forgiving sin, and using one person to help save another. The film also emphasizes loving God, confessing sins, repenting, seeking forgiveness, trusting others, helping people, and living selflessly.

The movie teaches that reconciliation comes through forgiveness, joy springs from love, and giving is more blessed than receiving. It values family and friends, marital reconciliation, and the possibility that caring for another person can restore a sense of worth. Sammy begins with an identity shaped by success and acclaim, while Max longs for love and acceptance; their friendship helps Sammy see himself as a good and valuable man.

The film’s central longing is for true meaning and purpose. Scripture connects that kind of changed life with forgiveness and renewed relationships: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
