THE BLIND SIDE
An inspiring true story of faith, hope, and a family that welcomes the overlooked.
Should You Watch It?
Yes, if your family is ready for a sincere, emotionally powerful story about Christian faith lived out in practical love. THE BLIND SIDE tells of a homeless teenager welcomed by a Christian family, and its strongest moments come from watching trust grow through ordinary acts of care.
The movie is not built around earth-shaking conflict. Its drama is quieter, but that subtlety becomes part of its appeal. The storytelling is fine, the performances are strong, and the emotional depth is real. Leigh Anne’s faith is unmistakable: she prays with her family, speaks openly about Christianity, and helps Michael because she believes it is right.
Some content calls for discernment, including sexual discussion, racial slurs, a fight, and references to drug addiction. Older teenagers and adults should find much to encourage them; younger children may need another choice. WORTH THE TRIP — OLDER TEENS AND ADULTS is the practical answer.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESMichael Oher is a homeless teenager with no possessions and little hope. Leigh Anne, a wealthy mother, gives him a place to stay, and one night becomes a new home with her family.
They help Michael enter a private Christian high school, where he slowly learns to trust them. When his grades improve, he joins the football team and discovers a strength rooted in protecting others. Soon, college recruiters begin calling.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is an excellent, uplifting movie with fine storytelling and great performances. The directing is surefooted, the story never lags, and the drama carries profound emotional depth.
Sandra Bullock is convincing as Leigh Anne, a Southern woman determined to help others despite the incomprehension of her socialite friends. Quinton Aaron gives a subtle performance as Michael, a quiet and withdrawn young man who slowly begins to open up. The conflicts are small rather than earth-shaking, and that subtlety may also be the film’s biggest flaw. Still, the result is terrifically poignant.
The Worldview
THE BLIND SIDE presents a very strong Christian, moral worldview. Leigh Anne helps Michael because she is a Christian and believes caring for him is the right thing to do. The family prays around the table and speaks freely about faith. The biblical admonition to care for orphans is lived out through welcoming Michael, helping him succeed in school, and supporting his path toward college.
The film also presents a strong belief in responsibility, protection, family, and practical compassion. It does not avoid every complication: a tutor says she has doubts about religion and later lies to persuade Michael to attend a certain school. The story also includes characters and situations shaped by racial prejudice, along with a clear emphasis on achievement and reaching college.
At its heart, the film argues that faith should move people to notice the vulnerable and act on their behalf. Scripture says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction” (James 1:27).
