Should You Watch It?

You get a compelling mystery, strong production values, excellent acting, and absolutely beautiful locations. The story draws you into Kya’s difficult life and keeps the question alive: did she murder Chase Andrews, or are the townspeople judging her unfairly?

The cost is significant. The movie includes heavy themes about physical abuse, foul language, and sexual immorality. Its worldview also mixes positive Christian examples with a humanist undertone that ultimately seems to dominate.

So, if you are a discerning adult prepared for those concerns, it is worth seeing for its storytelling and craft. For children and young teens, choose something else.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Kya has grown up alone in the Carolina marsh, becoming an outcast after one family member after another leaves her. Years later, she is charged with murdering Chase Andrews, a young man she was romantically involved with.

As Kya’s trial begins, she tells her lawyer the story of her life. Her memories lead through loneliness, abandonment, friendship, love, and the judgment of a community determined to decide who she is.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is an especially strong film in its craft and entertainment value. WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING has an engaging, intriguing story and compelling characters, with an unexpected twist viewers won’t see coming.

The scriptwriter does a good job adapting Delia Owens’ bestselling book. The acting is excellent, and the locations are absolutely beautiful. Together, these elements make the movie a well-made drama that sustains its mystery.

The Worldview

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING presents a mixed worldview. It includes positive and powerful Christian references, including a married Christian couple who care for Kya even when doing so may be harmful to them. Characters read from a Bible, and one character recites a Bible verse.

At the same time, the film carries a humanist undertone. Nature is presented in a way that suggests people’s natural inclinations are acceptable to pursue because they arise from human nature. Although the Christian examples are meaningful, the movie’s humanist attitude eventually seems to dominate.

The film’s strongest moral vision comes through care for a vulnerable person, but it does not consistently ground that care in God’s authority. Scripture gives that concern a firmer foundation: “Bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).
